Been thinking about purchasing a new player for movie watching downstairs but just not sure which format to go with, HD-DVD or Blu-Ray. I know some people have already purchased a new format player and just curious as to what helped you make your decision. So, I'm going to put up a poll to see what most people would purchase and why. So, after making your selection could you also give a reason as to why you choose the type of player you did.

I know, I tried to edit it after I submitted it but it would not let me. If anyone could tell me how to edit it I would greatly appreciate it.

I am really happy with my standard DVD's right now. Both my units upconvert to 1080 really well. No complaints with picture or sound, i am quite satisfied. I have over 500 DVD's in the collection right now and i'm not ready to start over.

HD-DVD because of picture quality, upgrade ability, movie availability (I'm up to about 40 titles now, and they're good movies). If in the market now, I'd wait for the second generation Toshiba players to come out.

I decided to stick with my Toshiba HD A1. It's way worth it for the money. The audio via HDMI on my Anthem is superb.

I'm guessing the majority of you that own an HD-DVD player own the Toshiba. How does it perform as far as menu loading speed. I know that when Samsung came out with the first Blu-Ray that hit the stores first, menu loads seemed to be it down fall, it took forever to load up the disc.

There are only Toshiba HD-DVD players right now (with an RCA built unit essentially the same thing). Both have the same electronics inside and function like computers, meaning they have to boot up when turned on. Load times for HD-DVD's are slow, not taking forever, more like a minute and a half. The newer models may be quicker loading, but I wouldn't count on them being as fast as regular DVD players. I don't care about the load times though. The picture quality of the $499 or less basic HD-DVD player is greatly superior to that from a standard DVD image, even on a $3800 DVD player, and the upconversion of standard DVD's from the Toshiba is equal to the higher priced player's upconversion too. Audio capability for movies is also superior.

All things considered, I would recommend HD-DVD now to anyone with a 40 inch or larger display. I would recommend sticking with standard DVD if using a display smaller than 40 inches.
