Why are MOMO 5.25" grilles so big?

They cover over 50% of the speaker! I would say 66%! It's made of 6 wide plastic spokes. Why block the sound?

Besides it looking cool, I'd say it's serving a speaker grill's main purpose: to protect the speaker itself.

I left them off. I don't want to block the sound. And I don't care one iota if my car interior or if I look cool. My car exterior doesn't look cool. Someone backed into it in a parking lot, dented it and never bothered to let me know! And kids keyed both sides of it! Cool never got anyone anywhere. I say leave "cool" up to Fonzie. Or at the least leave "cool" up to Sony speakers.

That's the problem with these retail electronic stores (ie. Circuit City). Everything has to look cool. You go to the car audio section and every speaker has to have its own "cool" look to them. That's how they hook people into buying them.

I'm going to die being an "uncool" guy in a plain "uncool" coffin. Or maybe I could wire a few Kicker or Audiobahn subwoofers to my coffin. That would raise the level of my coolness a bit and give the funeral in the Church a hell of a thump. Here I come Devil.

(On a side note the MOMOs put out more bass than my Infinity 6x9s.)

Well, that's certainly fine by me. Just don't complain when you or a passenger stick a foot or pencil or a knife or a nail file through a mid, lol.

I agree that the 'cool' factor is the major drive behind the mass audio equipment available. However, there is a difference between 'asthetically pleasing', 'cool', and 'bling'. I personally like a little flavor, but no bling, please, and I'll pass on it all together if I can't get some good sound along with it.

I have a pair of MM6500 mounted in the cockpit of my sailboat. I love the way they sound but the grill looks WAY out of place on a sailboat. I going with function over form. They definitely are geared for the Civic tuner crowd.
I like speakers that are bigger than a small refrigerator but smaller than a big refrigerator:D
