Ceiling Height & SRS 1.2 TLs

I was out house hunting again today and I came across some homes that had large spacious rooms that I felt would be complimentary to my 2 ch system especially the 1.2 TLs. A couple of these places had room sizes that were greater than or equal to 20' X 17'. However the ceiling heights could be as low as 6' high maybe even lower (I had to duck in a few and I'm just a tad under 5' 11").

It occured to me that high ceilings (excess of 9') would best suit the big 1.2 TLs.

Does anyone have any experience with the 1.2 TLs and low ceilings? Is there a way to treat/tune a low ceiling like you would treat/tune a "lively" or "dead" room?

All feedback and wise cracks are appreciated.

Thanks,
Joe

Those low ceilings are in lower levels or finished basements. The rest of the houses are 9' ceilings or more.

A vertical line array, which the SDA SRS has, focuses the sound straight out keeping floor and ceiling reflections from causing problems. The other way, left to right, are not affected by an array. The house with 6' ceilings would benifit from use of the SDA's more than the one with the tall ceilings. I would NEVER buy a house with ceilings lower than 7'. Used to live in one, it was hard to sell. As F1 said, no one wanted it.

While looking for a house I am always on the look out for a dedicated room ideally (minimum) 15.5' X 17.5 for my audio room. I just recently became concerned about ceiling heights because a lot of the large rooms that I could use for the 2 ch rig are in lower level or basements which usually have lower ceilings than the rest of the house.

My 1.2 TL's are in the basement with the ceiling a bit over 7 feet; they sound great!!

Off topic, but ceilings under 7" don't meet todays code for qualified finished living quarters. If you do want to finish an area like this, you may have to do it yourself under the radar of inspections and without a contractors help. It also may not be included in the valuation of your house.

Just FYI, as I ran into this a couple years ago. The basement theater was awesome though since it was 16 by 26. Lots of room to work with.

Is that code you're are speaking of a HUD code or is it local to your county/parish/township?
