My Universal player (Onkyo DV-SP502) not playing CDs all of a sudden

Hello,
I have an Onkyo Universal player (DV-SP502) and it played CDs, DVDs, SACDs, DVD-As etc. quite nicely, until ....
So yesterday a friend of mine came over and played a VCD on it. The player was supposed to play VCDs .. but it seemed to have triggered some sort of a code or something and now all of a sudden it won't recognize CDs.
It still plays DVDs, SACDs and DVD-As just fine but when I insert a CD, it just keeps spinning and then says "NO DISC".
I'm confused why it would play other formats but not CDs.
Any suggestions?
I tried to do a soft-reset (by pressing the STOP + STAND BY button) but that didn't help either.
Well - I certainly won't be playing VCDs on this system again but any suggestions on how I can fix this problem?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated since my wife is not happy with the current situation

I am a big fan of Onkyo recievers and amps. I have owned 5 units. I bought an Onk dvd player about 5 years ago and it was DOA. I got another one the that had a very short life span. Hate to say it but dvd/cd players are not Onk thing.......... The function and build quality was sub par.
Then a got an way over overpriced Denon. Built like a tank though. -
Ah, so you're saying that my player maybe dead? Well, atleast it's still under the 1yr warrantee. I guess I'll have to send it in to get it fixed - no other way out.Distant Dream - A New Beginning

Nopes - do you suggest getting a DVD lens cleaner? Any suggestions? Where can I get one?

Yep, or something similiar.

I got a lens cleaner from Radioshack - but no luck
The strange part is that DVDs, SACDs work just fine - no issues. CDs and SACDs just won't play.
Do these drives have like 2 types of mechanism handling CDs and DVDs??Distant Dream - A New Beginning

Onkyo customer support has to be the WORST out there - I called them several times, no one picks up the phone - goes to voice mail and no one bothers to reply. Emailed them like 5 times since last Monday and absolutely no response from them - FRUSTRATING :mad:Distant Dream - A New Beginning

I had a similar problem happen to me with my DV-CP702. It said "No Disc" and would cycle through the carousel even though I had a couple DVDs in there. INFURIATING!
I then discovered that the mode displayed on the player's screen was something other than "DVD". Turning it on/off did not reset this setting. I don't recall what I did to switch it back, but that may very well be your problem. It's a matter of pressing one button on either the remote or the unit itself. Hope this helps.
