I have to upgrade my AVR from 5.1 and, well there is just isn't the 5.1's out there and I'd like to go to a 7.1 (Denon 2807). I have an RM6000 set of speakers and I'm wondering if I can upgrade the system by adding a couple more speakers to what I have. I have thoughts on adding wall speakers or ceiling speakers. Comments welcome.

I’m a newbie, so help is really appreciated.

In the past 6 months I got a DirecTV HD system with TIVO and hooked it up to my Harrmon Kardon 510 and Fujitsu 42” plasma (the best video is component on this one, a 4220). The other component is a Panasonic ES45V DVD/VCR combo. The 510 had been acting up previously and over the past month its deciding to turn itself off. In addition, my wife has a 32” Sony LCD in her office and she likes TIVO and HD. So, I decided its time to get a new AVR that can handle the vido to the two rooms. Doing a bit of searching around, I found the Denon 2807 and went to the store to pet it. Its nice and the reviews are good.

Naturally things snowball and hence the speaker question. The Polk RM6000 is great, but with a new AVR I though adding the additional speakers would be a good thing. The room is 23 ft by 17 ft with 9 ft ceilings (about 4’ on one side is used more as a hallway and opens into a dining area. Currently the center speaker is under the plasma with the front speakers about 4’-6” away from center speaker. The listening area is about 12 ft back from the front speakers. The rear speakers are on the floor and at the back wall (yup, 23 ft from the front speakers and I think they are not positioned well). I also have all equipment in yet another room so only the plasma and the speakers are in the room (we like not seeing all the lights from the equipment). Rather than buy a new speaker system, I thought enhancing it might be the better option (I’m frugal too, not cheap). I also don’t know how ceiling speakers or wall speakers would react in the space.

I like instrumental jazz and the animated movies (Shrek, Monsters Inc., Ice Age, Chicken Little, etc). I also like the 5.1 that comes with the HD that I watch, typically the CSI shows, The Unit, things like that.

Let me know if you have any suggestions or need more info.
