Police report: Terrell Owens attempted suicide

08:38 AM CDT on Wednesday, September 27, 2006

WFAA-TV Staff

According to a Dallas police report obtained by News 8, Dallas Cowboys star receiver Terrell Owens attempted suicide Tuesday night.

The report says Owens was depressed and reportedly took prescription pain pills. A woman companion states that she observed him putting two pills in his mouth.

According to the police narrative, the woman said the prescription of 40 pills was filled on September 18 and—until Tuesday—Owens had taken only five pills.

The police report said Owens was asked if he had taken the rest of the prescription; Owens said, "Yes."

According to the report, police also asked if he was trying to harm himself. Owens answered, "Yes."

Owens was treated at Baylor University Medical Center.

A Dallas Cowboys spokesman told News 8 the team has no comment on the police report, nor is any news conference scheduled.

    Odd.... very odd.

Something doesn't sit right about the report. Obviously Owen's has issues, but I'd be surprised to find out he is suicidal. I guess you never know....

I would do anything to have the talent and the money he has. He always tries to screw everything up. What the hell is wrong with this a$$hole. He also has a little kid. This F-head only thinks about himself.

He's an attention grabber based on history, but I figured I would just post the report that came directly from Dallas.

Something tells me he was going for being the center of attention angle, and then he's going to make the miraculous comeback.

No matter how it comes down he's still a complete idiot with some major mental health issues.

I doubt we're getting the whole story here...

Look, the guy is a phenom who has soaked up every bit of media attention he could get over the past few years. So he's not a great teammate when things aren't going well, or going his way. He's one of the most talented, hardest working guys in the league. He never takes a play off and just wants to win. Clearly, he loves to stir things up in the media, and he's become a magnet for that reason. Bottom line- I'd take talent and work ethic like he brings any day, and let the childish bs roll off my back.

Hope he's ok physically and mentally. I've got him on my fantasy team.

Did a google search for "Terrel Owens suicide", WFAA, and even went to the Associated Press web site, and the material is pretty thin at best.

Calvin Hill, who works for the Cowboys and deals with "troubled" players had no inkling that Terrel may have had a problem with depression.

Reports are that the Medical Examiner says he took the pills at 7:30, and his PUBLICIST called 911 at 7:40. Fishy? Yes.

As for all of you who say "he has everything, what does he have to be depressed about"... well, in T.O's case I'm certainly not going to make excuses, because the guy's a scumbag, but in most cases, it really IS true that money doesnt' make you happy. No matter how many of us would "love to have their problems", it's pretty much statistically proven that the more money you have, the less happy you are. I'm sure we'd all like to think that we'd be the exception to the rule, and maybe we would be, but... almost every study on the subject says the same thing.

There's a difference between earning your riches, and just having it handed to you.

In any event, the story I posted was the first one to surface that I am aware of. It's all over the news media now, so I can't imagine anyone could possibly be having trouble finding more info.

In no way do I think this is a publicity stunt. Who would think this kind of publicity would EVER make a team want him? Couldn't have happened to a better team, IMO. The Cowboys and Jerry got exactly what they deserved for giving this guy an opportunity when one wasn't deserved. I don't wish any thing bad on T.O., but serves the Cowboys right.

I don't think anyone thinks this is so a team would want him. He's just the type of person who needs attention, just like a little kid. It has nothing to do with football, just his fragile little ego.

Yup, I agree. I also think it has nothing to do with depression, and everything to do with his ego. I can't wait to see the spin on this one. This isn't at all out of the realm of TO's typical behavioral pattern we've all seen in the past.

30 year old men who make 10 million a year, and have more rug thrown at them than a Chinese laundrymat, just don't kill themselves.

The more I hear about this, the more I feel that T.O. was merely addicted to pain killers. He had the broken leg not that long ago, and it's reasonable to assume he could easily get hooked on then. I think he was trying to pull a major buzz. Don't blame him for getting hooked if he did, it's easy.

It's moronic now to believe he tried to kill himself -- with pain killers. T.O. is a dummy, but I'm sure he's smart enough to use a gat if he really wanted to blow his brains out.

This is why people call those kinds of suicides "cries for help" or attention. If you were truly committed to killing yourself, it's not tough. When you use some convoluted and easily preventable way, you're usually just looking for people to pay attention to you and feel bad for you.

I've hated the Cowboys since they came into the league in 1960, I was 5 years old. They used to crush the Eagles year in and year out and we had a couple of kids in the neighborhood who were band wagon jumpers who became Cowboy fans which made the blood lust hatred even worse.   1960 was the last time the Eagle won a world title.:( But I am loyal unto death!!!

T.O. denies he tried to kill himself By JAIME ARON, AP Sports Writer
    3 minutes ago

DALLAS - Dallas Cowboys receiver Terrell Owens denied a police report Wednesday that he attempted suicide, saying he became groggy after mixing painkillers with supplements.

As if to prove he's doing fine, Owens went from the hospital to catching passes from quarterback Drew Bledsoe within two hours, then proclaimed himself "very capable of going out there and playing on Sunday" — despite whatever happened Tuesday night and a broken right hand.

Owens said the confusion likely stemmed from an empty bottle of pain medication found by his publicist, who was with him at the time and called 911. He said the rest of the pills were in a drawer.

"I was non-responsive when she made that call," Owens said. "She made the call out of her judgment for my well-being."

Appearing in a news conference at team headquarters a few hours after leaving a hospital for what a police report described as "a drug overdose," Owens wore workout gear and no bandage on his right hand. The star receiver smiled and seemed more amused than peeved at the latest ruckus surrounding him.

Owens, 32, blamed a combination of hydrocodone, a generic form of Vicodin, with all-natural supplements for making him ill.

"It's very unfortunate for it to go from an allergic reaction to a suicide attempt," he said.

Rescue workers arrived at Owens' home around 8 p.m. Tuesday and took him to an emergency room. When word spread, publicist Kim Etheredge said it was an allergic reaction.

But the story shifted Wednesday morning when several media outlets received a police report — that had yet to be released by the authorities — saying Owens had attempted suicide by overdosing on the painkillers, even putting two more pills into his mouth after an unidentified friend, later identified as Etheredge, intervened.

The police document, first reported by WFAA-TV, said Owens was asked by rescue workers "if he was attempting to harm himself, at which time (he) stated: 'Yes.'"

"I was kind of out of it," Owens said. "I can barely even remember the doctors, much less the police officers asking me questions."

Owens also said that he's "not depressed about anything."

Owens broke the bone leading to his right ring finger during a game a week ago Sunday. The next day, doctors screwed in a plate so the bone could heal without fear of further damage — leaving a 2-inch scar on top of his hand.

If he doesn't play this Sunday, Owens might still return for the following game — Oct. 8, in Philadelphia, against the team that dumped him midway through last season only months after he helped them reach the Super Bowl.

Etheredge also appeared at Owens' news conference, saying she "did not take anything out of his mouth" and that it was unfair for anyone to think Owens would kill himself.

"Terrell has 25 million reasons why he should be alive," she said, referring to the $25 million, three-year contract he signed in March with the Cowboys.

"I'm just upset," Etheredge added. "I feel they take advantage of Terrell. Had this been someone else, this may not have happened."

Dallas police officials declined to comment on Etheredge's denials. "We can't discuss the police report because of privacy laws," said a spokesman, Sgt. Gil Cerda.

Teammates and friends throughout the league rallied to support Owens even before he spoke, with many saying they thought the suicide report might be wrong.

"As soon as I got the news this morning, I had to make my call to make sure everything was OK. You know what? It was," said Cincinnati receiver Chad Johnson, a close friend through their rivalry over the best end-zone celebrations.

Former Cowboys star Deion Sanders was with Owens at his home before he went to team headquarters.

"From my understanding, looking at him in the eye as a man and as a big brother, I said `Be straight up with me.' He seems to be OK," Sanders told the NFL Network, where he works as an analyst.

After getting almost strictly Owens-related questions, coach Bill Parcells cut off his usual 25-30 minute session after only nine minutes. He ended it by getting up from his chair and saying, "When I find out what the hell is going on, you will know. Until then, I'm not getting interrogated for no reason."

Police Lt. Rick Watson said during his brief news conference that he could only confirm paramedics called police to say they were taking Owens to the hospital. He said no more details would come from the police because no laws were broken.

"We looked into it, and we determined it is not a criminal offense," Watson said. "This a medical type of situation that occurred."

Watson released the version of the police narrative with certain sections blacked out. The full report was obtained by several news outlets and reported first by WFAA. The Associated Press received the full version from WFAA.

The tape of the 911 call could help clear things up. The AP filed a request under the Texas Public Information Act to get its contents, but fire department officials said it would not be available before late Wednesday.
