Polksters,
My nephew wants to play his X-Box 360, live. What do I have to do to get this to happen, let me here from the experts. I have no clue.

Go to a place that sells the XBox 360s, and buy the year long subscription card. Make sure you have an ethernet connection going to the back of the 360 (It's the same as the one in your PC). He'll have to pick a user name, and then enter the activation code on the card. Then you can go from there.
If you're savy, you don't even have to go to the store. You can just purchase the subscription directly from Microsoft through your 360. -
do you still need to buy a wireless adaptor for the the 360 or does it already come built in?
if it doesn't, you also need to purchase a router and a wireless adaptor. Just make sure you don't buy linksys, mine always just disconnects for no reason.AVR: H/K AVR240

One small recommendation on the wireless adapter, the one that was designed and build for it works the best for me. It connects easily, always on, never had problem. Before I tried a couple off the shelf USB-based wireless adapter, too much connection problem. It is a bit pricier, but it fits nicely.I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie.

+1 with wingnut, there are always allot of profanity going on, racists slurs and more going on in there. If any of you play Call of Duty 2, look for NWA Boy Boy. I look forward to the challenge.Shoot the jumper.....................BALLIN.............!!!!!

.....but you can put up with some of the hardheads on here ?
Ditto on getting the Microsoft wireless for the 360. Some of the hoops that the non-MS wireless manufacturers make you jump through would make an IT pro cry.
......I know they cry easily, but still.......stick with the MS wireless.Sal Palooza -

If you have a hard wired router, you'll need to run a cable with an Ethernet connection from your router to the back of your XBox.
If you have a wireless router, you'll need to get the wireless adapter that you were inquiring about:
It's like 90 bucks..... -

Thanks Demi. I need to find out if I have a wireless router or not. I think its just the basic modem from comcast cable. Can I buy a longer ethernet cable? Yeah, you just need to buy a longer cable. Do you have a cable running into the back of your PC? If so, you're hard wired (no wireless), and you just need to get the same thing for the XBox (at the appropriate length, of course). -
If all you have is the modem, you are going to need to get either a wired router or wireless router, unless the modem itself has more than one cat-5 outlet (which it likely doesn't). So, if you want both your xbox and your computer connected at the same time, you probably will need to also get a router.

The **** is right, I forgot that not everyone has a router.

Thanks alot guys. I looked at the modem last night, and I am going to need a wireless router, the Xbox 360 wireless adapter, and the Xbox gold package. I just spent about $400 clams on the system, and a few bucks extra on an extra controller, also a few games. Man, the "Live" may be a few more weeks in the making. I may have to grovel a little to spend that extra.;) I think I am going the wireless route. I came up with about a $200 price range for every thing. Once again thanks for everything. Eh, don't worry, I still won't go wireless myself yet because of security issues.

Xbox live is easily worth that price of admission. It makes your experience much, much better.
