The guy did a great thing...but...get over it. I can't believe they made that big of a deal out of it. I don't know of a single one of my closest friends that would have let them burn that flag either, and in fact, I probably would have beat the living **** out of them instead. I mean, this guy honestly thinks he's a hero for what he did. He never once mentions the liklihood of someone else doing the same thing. He was in the right place at the right time and now he's being honored on a weekly basis, to this day, for what he did.

Again, GREAT job there, buddy, but holy cow ****, let it go.

You're really missing the point. Did you happen to catch the date? You do realize the the Vietnam War was still going on and Patriotism was not exactly running rampant in the Good Ol' U.S. of A.

While not a heroic act by definition, it was an act of Patriotism and RESPECT...and thats worth noting. Rick Monday did what a lot of people would have done, but more importamtly he did what a lot of would not have done. I don't get the impression that Mr. Monday thinks he's anything special, nor do I think that he expected to be reliving it everyday for 30+ years.

He acted...and was a thing of beauty.

The Vietnam War had been over for a year... and the US had withdrawn all soldiers 2 years earlier (remember? Nixon got us out of Vietnam).

Anyhow, it is pretty funny to see a couple hippy showoff jerks get the rug yanked out frm under them.

    Close...
    1975
Ford Calls Vietnam War "Finished": Anticipating the fall of Saigon to Communist forces, US President Gerald Ford, speaking in New Orleans, announces that as far as the US is concerned, the Vietnam War is "finished."

Last Americans Evacuate as Saigon Falls to Communists: South Vietnamese President Duong Van Minh delivers an unconditional surrender to the Communists in the early hours of April 30. North Vietnamese Colonel Bui Tin accepts the surrender and assures Minh that, "...Only the Americans have been beaten. If you are patriots, consider this a moment of joy." As the few remaining Americans evacuate Saigon, the last two US servicemen to die in Vietnam are killed when their helicopter crashes.

Frank Z, take a $10 spot from the cash drawer; great post.

    :)

Rick Monday doesn't consider himself a hero; the fact that Vets still mail him weekly with "Thanks" show that they understand.

Umm, correction: 2:59 he clearly states, "I don't know anyone what wouldn't have done the same thing, if they had been as close to it as I was."

Give the guy a break would ya? :) It was a small act of patriotism. Call it what it is.

I'm a big baseball fan, and that was new to me.

I was expecting, however, to see the replay of Jose Canseco heading the baseball for a homerun. That was the best play in baseball ever.

    I think you're absolutely right:D

Kevin Mitchell's barehanded catch in leftfield is a close-second

That was great, thanks for posting Frank.

That was a great one. I did something similar playing beer-league softball once. The problem is I needed to catch it bare-handed because I totally mis-judged the ball. Too much beer between innings, and you barely feel a softball. Kevin's was a great play.

To further derail, I'll put my vote in for Kirk Gibson's HR in the World Series with the A's. Changed the series. Eckersley was almost un-hittable that year.

-- Bo Jackson's run up the wall

-- Ozzie Smith's barehanded diving snag after a bad bounce

-- Jose Canseco's home run off a pitch-out (it was Canseco, wasn't it?)

sorry for the derail... just had to throw these out. Great clip, as it always gets me.

Neat clip that is my first time seeing it. I think Jimmy Carter should have had those two meat heads stripped of their US citizenship and have them deported.:D

Next to Cansecos brilliant display of fielding, the best play in baseball was Joe Carters 9th inning home run to win the World Series for Toronto.
