MONITOR 40'S TO Rti-6'S

Looking to improve my living room system I purchased a set of Rti-6 speakers yesterday. Alot of people on here don't like the Monitor series so I thought this would be a weak link in my system.
There was VERY little improvment with the Rti-6. I lost some mid-range but the speaker was alittle sharper. Not worth the money from one to the other.
I listened to the Lsi-7 & 9's. I did not like the 7's but the 9's were very sweet.
The salesman at tweeter ran the 9's on a Yamaha Rx-V659 with no amp. I was shocked when he turned the volume up and found no clipping. He didn't run it long, i'm sure it would have overheated if he had.

most people here don't like the monitor series for 3 reason.

1. its entry level so most audiophiles could give a crap.
2. Its sold at CC.
3. most who heard the monitor series only heard at CC running with a crappy avr and through a speaker selector thingy do.

You run the monitor series at home with a decent avr/amp, they sound pretty good for the price.

Ah, a valid point. Keep in mind I bought this system at the same time my wife was giving berth to twin girls.

Yamaha Rx-V 650
Mon. 40 fronts
Mon 30 rears
cs1 center psw 303 sub.
Denon 2900 dvd.

Money was tight when I put this together but my old system was about 8 yrs, old and had the digital processor in the dvd. The avr was only digital ready. when the dvd broke I bought all new equipment.

I am NOT happy with it and I'm trying to change that.

I'm not too famaliar with yahama, but I'd say that would be the first upgrade. and/or get a seperate amp, then go from there. Im just saying because by the looks of it, you want to upgrade to the lsi's, and you won't want to use an yamaha avr with lsi's;) . And in the mean time would make your current system sound much better.

well, it looks like your yammie has pre-outs, so I'd say just shoot for a good seperate amp.

It all matters what your budget is. If you only have enough money to upgrade one at a time, then I'd say just get the amp now, speakers later. If you a lot of money to do what you want, you are a **** and I envy you:(

What exactly are you looking for? Are you looking to improve on the Monitor series? In what way (vocals, mids, bass)?

How much are you trying to spend?

Remember, in audio, you get what you pay for (atleast for the most part) and if you have an ear for truly truly good sound, your wallet is in definite trouble.

The system has crisp highs and The sub produces a fair amount of bass but I have no mid-range and NO warmth what so ever.I know yamaha's have a rep for being bright but this think is nuts.
My 2-channel in my shop is an old yamaha w/ Boston VR-30's and the sound is great. After the Rti's I hooked up the boston's just to see if they made a difference. Even those sounded bad all high's and no mid or bass (sub turned off.)

I have the speakers set to large and the cross over at 60hz. I play music in straight 2-channel. Even my wife who is NOT into the hobby said it sounds bad.

Sounds like the LSi15 is right for you.

I have to stay with bookshelf style due to space. The new TV takes up to much room. If I could I would have used my boston towers (but they sounded bad when I used them for a test)
I'm having the recv. tested at tweeter tonight.

Actually the Yammie 659 should not have too much trouble powering the Lsi9's as long as the receiver is NOT powering other speakers especailly if they are 4 ohm. Keep in mind that the volume stays at reasonable levels and NOT insane. In other words in "stereo" mode the Yammie would power the Lsi9's to decent levels for a relatively long period. Of course there needs to be plenty of room for ventilazation.

Assuming the receiver isn't defective, you might want to consider a couple things.

1) Disable any EQ settings your auto set-up may be applying.

2) Try running your RTi6's set to large in direct/pure stereo (no sub and no surround processing). This will give you a truer representation of how they sound. If you don't like the way they sound in this scenario, you may want to consider other equipment.

3) Try the RTi6's with your old receiver to determine if the problem is the new receiver.

4) Let the RTi6's break-in around 24 hours with moderate level music.

Thanks for all the info. Turns out the unit had a bad amp. This is being fixed. But while I was there I upgraded to the RX-V2500. This unit is on a whole other level and sounds much nicer. I got a great deal on it (300.00 off) and a 5 year warrenty. Next step is a set of Lsi-9's for front & rear and the lsi center.
I cheaped out last time and have wound up spending more money. I should have done it right the first time.

This hobby is almost as bad as my car and motorcycle habbit. Christmas is on the way and I have my speakers for sale because I, well everyone has been there, you don't like your stuff-upgrade one thing and now you HAVE to get the rest of the equipment to match and you need it yesterday! I may go with Rti-6's. I herd them on a recevier that was working right and I have to say they sounded much better then my monitors.
I'm starting to hate toys. I sold my Camaro because it was costing to much. So now I wind up acting like a junky for stereo equipment. I think my wife will kill me if I shellout the cash for the Lsi's. She dosen't think I'm going to sell anything since last time I said I was going to sell my old system it ended up in my garage. You Have to listen to someting while turning wrenches, right?

lol, that sounds VERY familiar. It's hard to get that hook out.

My reco is to get yourself set-up in a matched/balanced system and try to enjoy it for a while. Oh, and stay away from this forum.:D

There it is! It's that matched/balanced thing that kills you. You upgrade one thing and you just know your not getting your full potential out of it because of this part or that part.
I got a new camshaft but it would even be better with a bigger carb. Then it's heads and it would all tie together real nice with a lower rear gear.
I thought the audio jones would be cheaper but now I'm not sure. My pop bought me my first "good" stereo when I was 12. Yamaha recevier, turn table with EPI speakers (those EPI's were great) and it's been upgrade city ever since. What the hell was my old man thinking?
