Sub out setup

I have a Yamaha RX-V795 with the sub hooked up to the sub out on the pre outs. I have RTi10's for fronts. I have the option of bass going to the sub, mains or both. The cut off frequency for the sub out is 90Hz from the AVR.

I could be wrong but if I use the sub setting I am under utilizing the RTi10's, If I use the main setting what is the point of the sub?, If I use the both setting there seems to be to much bass. I am not sure which setting to use and I seem to be constantly adjusting levels.

What say you?

I also noticed that while listening to music that the mid range driver looked like it was working real hard at above " normal listen level" not real loud but loud enough for the wife to tell me to turn it down. Is this normal or a function of the power rating(85 watts) of my AVR?
I like speakers that are bigger than a small refrigerator but smaller than a big refrigerator:D

One thing you could try is to set your RTi10s to "large", center and surrounds to "small", and sub to "on".

In this case, for 2 ch music, your sub will not be enabled and your RTi10s will run full range. They may sound better running full range without the sub for 2 ch music.

This is just a personal preference, but for music, I prefer running my tower speakers full range without a sub.

For surround sound, your sub will get <90 Hz content from the center and surrounds and will also get LFE (.1) content from the soundtrack.

Down the road (if you get the upgrade bug and assuming your AVR has pre-outs for the front channels), you could add a separate higher power amp to power the RTi10s, which should improve their sound over the internal AVR amp.
