I received these speakers over 20 years ago. They seem to sound ok on most of the music I play but I have some Sarah Brightman Cd's and I can hear distortion on some of the music passages. I cleaned both the cd and the player to see it it helped. I think its the strength of her voice and any other vocalist that my speakers cannot handle properly.
These are my Questions:
How can I test my woofer and tweeter to see if they operating properly?
I can only hear sound coming from the woofer.
The specs of the speakers are:
Impedance 8 ohms, imput power 100 watt, cross over frequency 4000 Hz, output sound pressurelevel 92dB/W(1.0m).
Do I need to upgrade?
The receiver is new, its an Onkyo TX-8511 and My cd/dvd player is a Sony DVP-NS775V.
I have a Volt/Ohm meter but am not sure how I should hook it up to the interior speaker connections. Thanks for any replys.

I'm not familiar with that particular model...what material are the surrounds made out of? Rubber? Foam? If foam, they are rotted out in all probability...but if you can't hear anything coming out of the tweeter, thats a bigger/different problem...might be a toasted coil, and if that is the case, you'll have to decide how much you want to keep them...could be an easy/inexpensive fix, might not be. Being that this is a Polk forum, I'd suggest trying out some Polks, but check with a local dealer and see if you can get an in-home tryout of whatever fits your budget/room.

The surrounds feel more like paper then foam. Should'nt I get some type of reading on my volt meter at the driver imput connections on the tweeter? The speakers maybe more then 20 years old. I do not know how long they were in service before I got them.

IMHO, they have given you your moneys worth. You could start to repair/upgrade them, if you wish, but I would probably be looking for their replacements...

    Thanks to all,
I checked out the polk monitor 50 online at circuit city. Over 95% of people who purchased them are happy with them. Now I need some recommendations as to what model I should get for a room that is 15 feet wide and 20 feet long. The speakers will go in a corner of the room. I won't get a sub woofer immediantly as reccomended by most until I had the speakers for a while to see if its necessary for my tastes in sound.

    rjordan392,

welcome to our humble Polk Audio forum. You'll likely learn alot about speakers, home theater and stereo equipment in here. THe folks here are very helpful, and we love to help other people spend their money. ha ha ha.

Serioulsly though, Polk Audio offers a couple of different models of home speakers. There are the Monitor line, the RTi line, then finally the high end LSi.

Polk speakers were made to last.. several of us in here still use some of their 20+ year old speakers. They hold up well over time. Upgrading and replacing what needs to be done to keep them going to for 20+ or more years.

Start with a buget then go demo all the Polk Audio speakers that your local store carries. Even though some may be out of your price range.. take a listen to them as well. It will be worth your time trust me.

Personally, I like to overbuy when it comes to speakers. I don't want to have to replace them a year or two down the road because I outgrew them. SO depending on your current and future needs.. consider going with the next level up model or speaker line.

good luck and have fun. Come back and ask any other questions you might have.

    :)
