For Sale: Apogee Centaurus Minors
So youve wanted to try some ribbons but the size and cost of the Carvers and Maggies do not make the cut on the WAF. Heres a chance to try a pair of great ribbon tweeters without the large size of most planars.
My friend Dan is a dipole kind of guy. So much so I call him dipole Dan. Dan is about to retire and move to Annapolis, MD next year to be closer to his grandchildren. The problem is Dan is a planar junkie and his wife wont let him bring his toys to their new home. She has told him to clear out the media room! I helped Dan sell his spanking new pair of Maggie 1.6s a couple of weeks ago. Soon after they were picked up Dan said to me I have this pair of Apogees in the garage, can you help me sell these?
So, here they are a pair of Apogee Centaur Minors with stand and a spare replacement ribbon. Purchased in 1991 for $1,150, they are not as tall as some of the Carvers or Maggies (check out the photographs). The size also brings a limitation, the wonderful sound these produce is mostly appreciated from a sitting position. Stand up, and much of the sound almost disappears. The speakers have a wide sweet spot, not beamy at all. The speakers have a wonderful airy sound very characteristic of planars. Everyone sitting in the room will enjoy a very nice image. The frequency response is 40 Hz to 20 KHz. You will need a subwoofer to fully appreciate these speakers. If you have some big planars, these could make real nice rear surrounds for your HT system.
These speakers are 39 X 13 D X 9 W; the stand will raise the speaker to 47 H. Nominal impedance is 6 Ohms (4 Ohms minimum) so you wont power these with a wimpy receiver. 50 wpc minimum is recommended. One of the speaker cloth covers was badly clawed by the bad kitty and needs to be replaced; the other cloth has a couple of claw marks. I would replace both if I were buying these. There is also one small nick in the front baffle of one speaker, its too small to see on the attached photos.
These speakers have a fanatical cult following. I will list these on the Apogee Forum and/or Audiogon next week. I would like one of my Forum friends to own these. $350 plus shipping. I have the original packaging, boxes, manuals, bill of sale, etc. Each speaker weighs 50 lb. Pick up is also available near Pittsburgh, PA.
Anyone who has heard the Apogees are welcome to chime in here!
