Receiver Crossover Settings

Greetings -

I'm in the process of finally leaving my system ALONE! I've set and reset just about everything, speaker positions, Time Delay, dB levels, etc. and finally have got things JUST ABOUT RIGHT!

I'm not Bi-wired at this time.

My questions is this:
Since I've got a single +- cable to each speaker - 2 Front, 2 Surround, 1 Center are there internal crossover circuits in the speakers (RTi10s, RTi6s and CSi5) to filter the sound appropriately to the Woofers/Mids and Tweets http://www.polkaudio.com/forums/images/smilies/confused.gif
? Therefore, shouldn't I allow the maximum frequency pass from my amplifier?

Any explaination of this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
JB

There are appropriate crossovers inside each cabinet. The crossover settings within the receiver is for speakers that don't reproduce low frequencies(or high frequencies for subwoofers) well.

For instance, the RTi6's have a low end frequency response that probably sounds best above 60 Hz. It can play frequencies lower than that, but at lower volumes than the ranges above 60 Hz.

The 10's have more capabilities to play lower, and probably extend to a usable 35-40 Hz range.

Since the audible frequency spectrum is approx 20Hz-20,000Hz, there is a little bit of information that is missing from the spectrum.

A subwoofer could be added to the system to play the lower frequencies with more force(loudness), without adding distortion.

From this background, here are my suggested settings:

-Rears and center should be set to small, with a crossover frequency between 60 and 80Hz.
-The 10's should be set to large, because they have more capabilities to handle the lower frequencies.

If a subwoofer is added, and the system is mostly used for movies, then put the 10's to small as well, with the receiver's crossover point as low as you can set it.

I can explain more later, if needed, or there others that can help as well.

BTW, welcome to the forum. Enjoy the new speaks

    Okie -

Thanks for the welcome and for the info..

I've got a PSW303 - I have all of my speakers set to Large - I'll change that to Small and see how it sounds!

I suppose to go further with the question - I can set my crossover frequencies for the Front, Center and Surround Channels (1kHz to 10kHz for Treble and Midrange and up to 1kHz for Bass) - Shouid I maximize the HighPass Filter setting in the receiver and allow the speakers RLC to filter the signal appropriately?
