Check out Radioshack... since so many of them are closing down right now, you might be able to find a great deal.I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore

RadioShack is not going out of business (just yet).... Times are bad for them however, and I know of at least three within 15 minutes of me that are closing their doors permanently. A lot of people have posted of late regarding some great deals on Monster products -- which Radioshack carries.
We'll let sleeping dogs lie on that issue....
If you can make your way to such a store, I just figured it might be possible that their SPL meters might be greatly reduced along with the rest of their inventory.I never had it like this where I grew up. If you use your receivers test tones use 75db. set the receiver on "0" using the relative scale, then use the trim levels for each channel. The sub you want about a 6db boost if this is for HT.

Also look into buying a test disc... I believe the Avia is still the best available.
Here a calibaration thread. Good stuff is in its post #6.

I bought a Radio Shack SPL meter (digital readout, they said they did not have the analog any more). My AVR ( Zero )volume is wide open and I don't think that is the volume that I should use for many reasons. I don't have the Avia DVD yet but I used the THX set up on in the set up menu of Finding Nemo. I started with the volumn at 12 oclock or half and it was loud and my wife slammed the basement door. So being the right thinking man that likes to sleep next to the woman he loves I lowered the volume to @ 11 oclock.
I was able to balance the SPL to 73-74 db on all channels and the subwoofer to 80 db in the time I had available.
I am open to any suggestions.
Also I went to my local Tweeter where I have purchased most of my equipment and mentioned something about adding a power amp to my system and the salesman was insistant on purchasing a new AVR with 130 watts per channel rather than an amp. Given the equipment I have do you think he was being a salesman and do you think my AVR which has pre outs would be worthy of adding an amp or should I upgrade my AVR first and then look at adding an amp(s) as budget allows. And yes I will be on somewhat of a budget ala wife not understanding.

Hello Scott welcome to the forums. I am a separates guy. For two channel audio I won't even use an integrated amp. I'm not sure what you are planning on using the power amp for. Perhaps you could elaborate.
