Power question please =(
I am buying a CSi5, RTi10 fronts, and FXi3 rears. Ill prolly just get a 12"Dayton as a temp. sub.
After all this though I will be tight on cash. Anyone able to suggest a reciver that would be as cheap as possible, but not cheap enough to damage the speakers?
I was asking around on other forums if a dayton AVR-987 would be enough, and people told me it would prolly be to little and possibly cause damage to the speakers. (They say not enough power is worse that to much power).
Anyone care to help out a complete beginner?

Tell you what -- first invest in a good receiver. This is an area where you don't want to skimp. If you don't have the money to buy everything at once, then concentrate on setting up a nice 2-channel system with a Hsu or SVS or comparable sub, then buy the center channel and rear speakers later on. Just be patient and do right the first time.HT/2-channel Rig: Sony 50 LCD TV; Toshiba HD-A2 DVD player; Emotiva LMC-1 pre/pro; Rogue Audio M-120 monoblocks (modded); Placette RVC; Emotiva LPA-1 amp; Bada HD-22 tube CDP (modded); VMPS Tower II SE (fronts); DIY Clearwave Dynamic 4CC (center); Wharfedale Opus Tri-Surrounds (rear); and VMPS 215 sub

Welcome Eric. Plan on getting a receiver that has preamp outputs so that you can add separate amplification later on. Do a search here on the forum for receivers & separate amplification. You will learn a lot.Marantz AV-7705 PrePro, Classé 5 channel 200wpc Amp, Oppo 103 BluRay, Rotel RCD-1072 CDP, Sony XBR-49X800E TV, Polk S60 Main Speakers, Polk ES30 Center Channel, Polk S15 Surround Speakers SVS SB12-NSD x2

Agreed. Why have these kick **** speakers with a mediocre avr & sub. It will cost you more money doing it this way in the long run. Do it right the first time: AVR-Rti10-killer sub-center-rears. You won't regret it. -
Well the reason I wanna get these speakers now is because at this time I can get a 60% discount on them.
As far as a sub goes, I do want a SVS, but chances are I will have the sub turned as low in volume as it can go until I move next March, so the Sub isnt a thing I really need at the moment. I live in an apartment and all my Subs(Computer and HTIB) are always pretty much off, neighbors like to complain.
So as far as the sub goes I think I would be fine without one until I can afford the best.
Im just wondering about the power I need, lots of high end recivers dont seem to get close to what the speakers can handle.
I know getting an Amp would be ideal, but what would hold me over till then. As far as RMS power goes.
For example, the harman/kardon AVR-635 seems like it is good. It carries a price tag of $1300, but it only is giveing 75watt per channel. Is that going to be enough for speakers that can take 300?
I dont know if Im looking at the specs in the correct fashion. How much money would one spend on a decent reciver? Obviously spend as much as you can afford, but I am trying to figure out how much Im going to have to spend.
To me it looks like even the most high end recivers dont output enough power to make these babies run.
I figured the Denon(I said Dayton in my ealier post, oops) AVR-987 would be enough at 110watts per channel. Guess not though? What if I added an AMP to this?
How much would I be looking spend on a decent reciver? -
One thing to keep in mind is that the specs are not created equally. Sure on company might say it's 100wpc when another says they put out 55wpc. I went from an 85wpc yamaha to a 65 wpc HK and the HK kicks major butt.

That's the order I put together my H/T system. It took about 6 months, but it was worth it. BTW, the H/K 635 powered my RTi8's just fine before I added the Rotel amp. -

+1..............buy used with preouts. Get the Rti10's and CSi5 first. You might get 60% off now, but it will cost you more in the long run. Do it right the first time and be happy. Besides you can listen to 2 channel right away and you will have HT without the surround for now. Add the surround and sub in 6 months when you move and be done with it.
BTW, welcome to the club. This is an awesome forum!

Eric, there is no AVR that will put out all of the power that speakers can handle. That is what separate amplification is for.
Just go & listen to a variety of receivers & pick the one that has all of the features you want in it (MOST ESPECIALLY PREAMP OUTPUTS!) and has a sound that you like.
If possible, listen to them playing the RTI 10's.Marantz AV-7705 PrePro, Classé 5 channel 200wpc Amp, Oppo 103 BluRay, Rotel RCD-1072 CDP, Sony XBR-49X800E TV, Polk S60 Main Speakers, Polk ES30 Center Channel, Polk S15 Surround Speakers SVS SB12-NSD x2 -
One last question.
Would something like THIS be ok. If I connected it to a good amp? -
You'd be laughing if you went that route. Heck you could even go for something a tad cheaper and spend the extra on a better amp.
-
Eric, If you look at the Denon's 19xx & 21xx series, you will find basically the same machine for less money with preamp outputs. Hook it up to separate amplification & you are all set.
Use the money that you save & put some more with it & get a 5-7 channel amp. Look at used Outlaws, Rotels, Parasounds, etc.
Try to get a 200 wpc amp, that will show you the biggest improvement. You have great speakers & they deserve that much power.Marantz AV-7705 PrePro, Classé 5 channel 200wpc Amp, Oppo 103 BluRay, Rotel RCD-1072 CDP, Sony XBR-49X800E TV, Polk S60 Main Speakers, Polk ES30 Center Channel, Polk S15 Surround Speakers SVS SB12-NSD x2 -
Ok, this helps. I was thinking I needed a sweet reciver and a sweet amp. I am slowly understanding
-
Think of the receiver as having all the bells & whistles that you want it to have, and the separate amp will take care of all the power requirements.Marantz AV-7705 PrePro, Classé 5 channel 200wpc Amp, Oppo 103 BluRay, Rotel RCD-1072 CDP, Sony XBR-49X800E TV, Polk S60 Main Speakers, Polk ES30 Center Channel, Polk S15 Surround Speakers SVS SB12-NSD x2

Check the above link. They have a Denon AVR (3806 & 2807) and price is very competitive plus this receiver has HDMI input/output. -
Well I was thinking of going with the 987. Why you ask?
Check this out
Seems to be exactly the same as the 2807, and I can get the 987 for $550, brand new.
If that would be enough of a reciver to run as a preamp, then I could spend more on a better amp. -
