wow, freakin cool...and only $79 for a gb....that's cheaper then the shuffle was at 512mb...

i was against getting an ipod (because i don't have the need for 40 gb of space for music, or the time to sit and watch movies when im not at home) but this is very attractive to me. looks great for working out!

free engraving and free shipping too :) comes with a dock and ships in october.

Don't need 40GB for music? Geez, my collection isn' even that big and I have ~23GB just from all of my CDs ripped at a reasonable bitrate. My friend gave me his old 10GB iPod and it took me hours to pare down my songs to what I wanted to have on it :)

I have a hard time maxing my 1g. I just don't know what to put on it. The reason is that since it's so small I have to be more selective on what gets transferred to it. Now if I had a bigger one I would just rip whole albums.

As for that tiny one, it seems to small and delicate

    holy crap!!

I bought the 60gb thinking I needed that much space with all my cds (and relatives cds that i was gonna borrow;) )

the iPod aint even half way filled up...and I ripped a TON of cds at a higher bitrate than the standard 128 for better quality..

    you must have 1000 cds...

I'm currently at 18.4gb in my mp3 directory. I don't know how people can stand to listen to 128kbps MP3's. They're horrible. 320kbit is the lowest I encode at, and you can still hear a major difference between them and the actual CDs.

192 works fine for me. The only time I use MP3s are in my car or when walking around with headphones, and sometimes at my desk at work, neither of which are "critical listening" times for me. I can't tell the difference on a pair of crappy headphones or a cheap set of computer speakers anyways.

    YMMV.

Works fine for me for computer speakers or my clock radio. I have disagree that it is ok for headphones. If you use the cheap headbuds that come with the Ipod, maybe. I use high quality headphones and thus have to place music on my IPOD at near CD quality. I also connect my IPod directly to my stereo so it is important to have the best quality possible there as well.

If you place music in Lossless formats, then 60gb (like mine) is minimum size you want.

What point are "high quality" headphones being driven by an iPod?

Isn't that like driving LSi's with a Sony reciever?

Not exactly. Driving LSI's with a Sony receiver could sacrifice quality if you do not have adequate amplification or a quality DAC for music conversion.

The Ipod has plenty of amplification and a very nice DAC in it that does a commendable job of rendering music. Purchasing earphones from quality companies like SHURE or SUPER.FI and saving your music in a lossless format renders the music as close as you can get to the intentions of the production company. Some might even say that using the above setup is a way to determine how well your actual stereo system is reproducing the true stereo sound by comparing how the music sounds with stereo vs. earphones.

It's pretty decent in how it keeps putting pressure on the budget side of mp3 players and for the money it would be hard to beat. That said, I'd rather just spend half that much and buy a 2 gig sd card to chuck in my pocket pc. They also came out with an 80 gig video that's the same size as the previous 60gb and a 30gb that's smaller than before. Nano's in fancy colours as well (just like the mini's).

I'd love to carry the collection of music I have on my computer with me (around 60gb) but I just don't trust portable hard drive players. I work for a big box store and the amount of ipod returns we get is just amazing. Anything apple in general usually comes back (every single apple laptop or desktop we have sold has come back defective). They're always breaking down, freezing, crashing or just dying on people and for that reason I don't plan on dropping three hundred bucks on one. IMO hard drives are just too fragile and sensitive to be carrying with you in your pocket everyday.

Wow, that's small. In capacity, too. Like others have said, I woudln't dream of having less than 60gb for my iPod.

I have a little over half my CD collection ripped on my computer, and it takes up over 30gb.

Yes to both those questions but it's totally different. Cell phones don't have moving parts and aren't nearly as susceptible to shock aside from cracking a screen or breaking a hinge if it's a slider or flip phone. Having a hard drive in your pocket is like an egg just waiting to be shaken up and destroyed. The beauty of the nano and shuffle is that they're flash. Flash memory is much much harder to break. It'll corrupt on you without much warning but that's an easy fix.

HD MP3 players are great and all but don't expect it to last more than a couple years... The first ipod ever was five or ten gig and released on October 23, 2001. It's been a mere five years since the first and only two since the photo came out. How many first gen or even a two year old 4th gen ipods do you see that aren't broken or have some kind of problem with them (usually hd related) ?? They're just unreliable and most of that is because it's a sensitive product and your pocket isn't the friendliest envrionment, especially if you fumble it taking it out.

You don't know much about hard drives do you?

Like Michael said, cell phones don't have moving parts. Cars are infinitely more complicated and designed to be jostled. Hard drives are rapidly spinning platters with read arms sticking into them. The right bump can send one of those arms gouging into the platters, and bam, ruined hard drive. They can ruggedize them as much as they want, they're still inherently not a perfect portable model.

actually, i know a little bit. I'm an electrical engineer:D

Cell phones probably wasnt the best example as theres only a handfull of them out there with actual hard drives, but they are out there. Id imagine they get dropped a lot more than iPods as more than likely, they get used a lot more.

Fact of the matter is, with todays technology we are very capable of putting hard drives in mobile envrioments. For instance...laptops...

Do you jog with your laptop? Most new laptops are being built with technology to park the hard drive on an impact to lessen the chance of a hard drive crash. It's not that hard-drive based mp3 players are not usable in a "mobile environment", but if you're going to be jostling it a lot, especially while it's on, IE running or doing anything active, you're MUCH better off with something flash-based.

Well, most iPods are kept on your arm or in your pocket while do anything active. Hardly a joult unless youre boxing with it on your arm. Now if you repeatedly dropped it, then yea. Normal jogging/lifting weights, no...

Well my 60gb ipod is used for office listening, home listening, car listening, watching movies while traveling, listening to audiobooks, and watching movies in hotel rooms via TV hookup. It allows me to take ALL my music, at least 10 movies, 14 audio books, and the current news in one small package anywhere I go.

When I exercise, I carry a 2gb Nano that is loaded full of songs to make me inspired to continue to exert myself. I do not carry it because I am worried about the harddrive of the video ipod because I have a warranty to cover that. I carry it because it is smaller. I guess I do not understand the logic in the arguments I am hearing.

If you want portability for your music, then nothing beats the ipod for ease and available accessories. If you want superb sound, then save your music as lossless and be sure to purchase good earphones. If you are worried about the harddrive in the ipod, then get a no-hassle extended warranty and treat it like a basketball if you want.

I really thought this thread was about announcing the new ipods that just came out for people to consider. I did not know it was about trying to justify why portable music players are preferred by most.
