I think one of the best ways to get a feel for a city is to hear the local music scene. Whether it be in a rat-infested dive or a fairly large venue, I try to check out local underground sounds whenever I'm in a different town.
I also try to attend as many as possible in my own stomping grounds.

I could wax poetic about the importance of independent music and the intimacy of a small stage, but I'd rather cut to the chase...

Go ahead and give props to those bands (or solo artists) that absolutely destroy at your local pub, induce ink-black silence among the crowd at the music hall, keep the people dancing until 5 AM in the club, etc.

Here a few from the 'ville....

VHS or Beta -- If Daft Punk played instruments and were fronted by Robert Smith, it might sound a little like this..... If anything can be said of their shows, it's that there's a lot of dancing, a lot of hotties, and even more dancing hotties. Their beats are infectious, and if you're into anything New Wave you should spin these guys. Catchy, catchy, catchy....

The Merediths -- Breezy, sunshine college rock in sort of the same vein as the Shins via the Flaming Lips -- with a bit more accessability. Instant singalongs, and always provides a healthy boost of optimism.

and of course....

My Morning Jacket -- Otherwise know as My Morning Crackhead because once you've seen one show, you have to see every show. Alt-punk-country-whatever at it's very finest. Jim James' reverb drenced vocals are sublime. His guitar playing courtesy of the Flying V is hellacious. So much energy and even more emotion... If you haven't heard 'em, buy It Still Moves. You'll thank me...

Now let's hear it for your own local scene...
I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore

Great thread, but I'll have to get back to you. I try to stay in contact with the local music scene, but I'm getting older and the performers are getting younger :p . Tonight, in a few hours, I'm going to check out an open jam session. Sometimes those turn out really cool other times it's nothing but a bunch of losers out to get hammered and trying to act cool with very little musical ability.

I'll certainly get back to this thread as I saw an awesome fusion/funk jazz band (ala Weather Report) this last weekend that really blew me away.

Good deal... I hope you do. I was kind of hoping that by starting this thread, I might pick up on some new sounds. I'm not much for mainstream, and even so-called indie or college stations get caugt spinning the same discs by the same bands.

I'd like to hear what else is out there...

btw I don't know if you're from around Chicago, but there's a local band called The Tallest that put outs some unique material... catchy and accessible, dreamy and festive -- they're a tough sound to pin down. Most of their songs are about living underwater, running away to join the circus, trick or treating, etc. etc.

    Clutch

Hard Rock. An old favorite of mine from Glen Burnie, MD. Passive Restraints and Clutch(Self-Titled) are my favorites.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

VHS or Beta opened up for a Doves concert that I went to last September. I wasn't a big fan of their style, but it looked like there were several folks who enjoyed them.

Going to see a Midwest favorite tonight at my favorite club/lounge. Didn't even know they were in town until about an hour ago

    The Pipe Circus

    http://www.pipecircus.com/

Very much a funkier version of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. They hail from Madison Wisconsin and have been around for a while. I've mentioned them before on CP, they put on a high energy very groove infected show.

    The Snaggs

    http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=6875803

My all time favorite local talent. Unfortunetly they are on hiatis as the guitarist just moved out of town. They are led by Holland Zander (daughter of Cheap Trick frontman Robin Zander) Cheap Trick's home town is my home town and they have family members in various bands around town. Rick and Bun E. still live here and I run into Rick all the time.

She has a great voice and they are a hard edged pop group that is heavily influenced by Cheap Trick and the Beatles. Their official website is down for the time being and she promised me she would be doing other musical projects outside the Snaggs while they are on break.

Check them out at the link I gave; some free downloads too.

P.S. Here is Holland's new project website

    Entrain.
Great local Cape (Cod) & Islands band with big horn and percussion section. Very popular locally.
