Any shortcomings that Elvis had professionally can be laid at the doorstep of his business manager, Colonel Tom Parker.
Elvis had the ability to become an excellent actor but Tom Parker kept Elvis restricted to movies like "Clam Bake" for the money.
Some of the non-commercial Gospel songs that Elvis occasionally sang made angels weep ! But .... no money in that for the Colonel, so .....
BTW, the 3 Grammy awards that Elvis won were for his Gospel recordings.
