Anyone know anything about this AVR. I could pick one up for 300 CDN. I had a Denon 3805 that i sold and am looking to replace it with something that is more directed toward sound quality instead of bells and whistles.

If it's an AVR 85 it is from the late 90's. It was a flagship model. Good 5.1 Avr with 90 HK w/c. IMO the 300 cn is a bit much, they can be found cheaper. I paid 24 us for mine at a Thrift store. Hope that helps.>

I noticed you are using yours as a pre. How do you find it does not having a pure direct mode only stereo mode for two channel.Onkyo TX NR 5008 modified by The Upgrade Company

I don't use it for two channel, I've got it hooked up to three front M10's and two M7's rear. Two channel is Carver separates. C-11 pre, TFM-35 bottom, TFM-25 top, bi-amped 2.3TL's. The HK does fine for when I watch a movie, which is seldom.>

oh i see...i don't have the luxury of two seperate systems so I'm trying to make the best i can with one AVR and my two channel rotel amp. Was hoping the HK might make a good pre.Onkyo TX NR 5008 modified by The Upgrade Company

I can't understand why you're considering a H/K avr-85 (Dolby Prologic I) over a Denon 3805 that you actually owned. If sound quality is what you want (the Denon i'd say would be pretty damn good) why not keep the Denon which would make a superior pre/pro and simply add an external amp that would blow away the Denon and especially an outdated H/K receiver in terms of that sound quality itch you looking to scratch..

well i had heard that some of the older HK models were better built in terms of sound quality and amplifier strength. And it is a general consensus on here that the new HK and Denons are equals. I figured that an older HK with less bells and whistles might be a step up musically than my Denon(which has plenty of toys that i never use). I do have a two channel amp but don't have the room to add a 5 channel cause of spacing in my rack.Onkyo TX NR 5008 modified by The Upgrade Company
