I know my 10's sounded great late at night...but during the day I noticed the brightness.Setup:

It makes sense to me that the rig sounds different depending on different moods, but I've never heard of a rig sounding better at night versus the day. That is very interesting to me and I'm gonna have to pay closer attention to see if I notice a difference. Anyone else experience this?

i perfer night to day also. Primarily becuase i cant see my speakers at night. all i see it the tv. it forces your ears to search for where the sound is coming from. You cant use your eyes to "focus" in on the sound.
my 2 cents -
When I got my rt800's I sold my R50's almost instantly; it was a night and day difference. I liked the 800s so much I got another set for surrounds

My setup sounds alot better at night.- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit.

I think it has to do with humidity and barometric pressures which is different at night than it is during the day. If light has trouble traveling through more humid conditions, then it just makes sense that these same conditions would affect sound waves.
Also, your hearing is more sensitive during the morning hours after the quiet of the sleep hours. One more thing, As sound pressure rises, you might be able to hear a little more clearly, up to a certain point, after that point, who knows. I know that when I listen there is a sound pressure range i prefer to use. The sound is about at the low talking level to talking level, it is easier for me to get the best sound for my ears. -
Sounds best when I've changed the chemical balance of my brain...

I'm with Andrew on this one. My 8's paired with my HK sounds fantastic, much better than when they were hooked up to my yammy. See my yammy now powers r10 in the bedroom and well I never listen to that system, my wife does every night and every morning.
My main system findings may have to do with the fact that no one around and that I know has a better system than me (I'm not showing off at all) but nothing out there that I can go to someone house and listen to will sound better than mine. I should know cause I hooked all of them up. So maybe my ears don't know what better or less bright (than my current mix) sounds like and it's to my benefit. I do sometimes find an over emphasis on the treble on some rock tunes. For Jazz, acid jazz, pop, blues calssical and old rock it's nice and for movies, well can't complain at all.
My 2 cents -
Which HK receiver are you using? I really like my 235, but I always intended to use it as an inexpensive pre/pro. It did a better job of running my Rs than the Onkyo 520, but even an 80w amp powering the fronts makes a big difference.Willow wrote:I'm with Andrew on this one. I didn't really want to do it, but I took back the 8s today. It was very nice having a seamless front soundstage. They did a lot of things extremely well. I really liked them. There just was some content that I couldn't get to sound right and, well, after listening to the SDA's, I just had to have them. Thanks everyone for your replies and advice.
Aren't 30 day return periods great...;)

how much does a set of sda's cost?
-
You know, I haven't done alot of checking...the range varies by condition and model. I picked these 1Cs up from trubluluc from the CP Flea Market and paid his asking price, $500, since other's here remarked these are fair prices, the speakers were emaculate (or very close) and I like the guy. Though vintage these speakers are in another league than the RTis.surfntomm wrote:how much does a set of sda's cost?

It may be your amp causing the screeching. I recently moved my Adcom 545 over to support my surrounds (RTi8s) and the screeching followed the amp. I now have 5 Outlaw monoblocks supporting my speakers and they have definitely never sounded so good. The Adcom is up for sale (any takers at $150 plus shipping from Balto?)Ron Temple wrote:I used to cut the Rs at 40 and 60 to eliminate some boominess when I had lesser subs. Since I brought in the SVS, I had no need to play with the crossover. I can see where cutting the 8s lower may create more transparency at the bottom...we'll see. My issues are at the top where screeching guitars can get a little harsh. Not that I didn't have the same problem with the R50s, but the sound was more diffuse, less detail and less evident to my brain. That added detail sounds wonderful on mellower content.
The RTi8 is a really nice speaker. I stepped up to the 8s from Monitor 70s and liked them so much that I put them into duty as surrounds and bought RTi10s for the mains. Most of what I listen to is multichannel music and those two sets of towers blend very nicely together with MC music.HT/music rig

Don't get me wrong I thought the 8s were very fne speakers for most everything I tried. Also, I have a budget setup that sounds great...for what it is. I'm sure I'll be swapping out gear as I go along. Sometimes just for grins.
