PC audio reverbing?

Whether I use iTunes 6 or Windows Media player, my mp3s sound like they have reverb on, especially the voices. Instrumental sections sound a little better, but generally the songs sound like there is an artificial stereo image enhancer running, or reverb (the instruments sound like they're about 10 feet back in a tunnel; the voices sound like they're about 100 feet back). If this were my home stereo, I'd check the phase of the speakers (sort of sounds like when your L and R are out of phase - but again, really only on vocals). But this is simple plug in desktop PC speakers.
I can't find any 'reverb' or echo setting on my PCs audio controls. It might have one (?), but I can't find it (HP pavilion a520n), WinXP. I was hoping maybe it was just an iTunes problem, but the songs sound the same on Windows media player.
It isn't the mp3s - they sound fine at work on headphones, and they sound fine when converted to CD format and played on the home system.
Insight? Opinions?
Thanks.
EDIT: I found the iTunes equalizer. It is set to flat.
EDIT^2: dammit. I found it. There is a "3D Depth" setting on the full audio control console and I glossed right over it.
