Is this wire any good?

Got a pair from the guy I sold my AVR to. He was talking about these custom, silver cables his buddy built from I believe telephone wire. His buddy was into good stuff and he inherited this after his bud passed in The Big Easy during Katrina.

He wanted a better price on my piece so I offered to take these in trade, sight unseen. They don't look silver to me....Each split has about 7 individual copper strands of decent gauge. The only writing I can make out is on the black part of one and it says "Sumi PAC Sumitube." Probably crap, but I thought I'd ask since I humbly don't know.

He swears he noticed a difference and that were very airy or something, but perhaps he had them confused with his Signal Cable Risers.:D Anyhow, since my setup is down at the moment, I don't have the op to even try. Better or worse than Monster Cable or comparable wire?

Yep, CAT5. It's a little time consuming to build and lackluster sonically, but at least the legwork is done for you.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

Well, they are yours now, so have some fun, give them some time in the rig when you can.

One thing about the hobby, you have to have things, half the time if I had things, I would have not had to have had to buy things.;)

The other half I have had to have put on hold.

If they were in Katrina flood waters they might have a watered down / muddy sound. :) But on a serious note, think about what was in the water. Raw sewerage and benezine just to name a few. At the very least try to disinfect them. If you could have seen what it was like down there, you would throw them away.

Kajun, thanks. I might be wrong about them coming from the storm, but I know he passed during the storm. Was down there for Jazzfest and got a personal tour of the Lower 9th from a woman we met who grew up next door to Kermit Ruffins. She sings in Deacon John's band. Her house and Kermits house were no where to be found. An unreal site indeed. I looked at buying a house in midtown the previous year. Glad I didn't. If you are from there, hope you find your way back. Nawlin's is my second home. Best regards.

Is anyone actually using these in their rig? There must be something to all this.

I use simple twisted pairs of cat5 cabling (one run "+", the other "-") on my big stereo in the LR. I think it's quite good. I liked the price best of all (free; picked up scraps from the network cable guys @ work).

Don't get sucked too far into cable hype. Cables can make a sonic difference, whether at line-level (i.e., interconnects) or at output level (speaker cables). But they are fundamentally (IMNSHO) very expensive and inefficient tone controls. If you want to color the sound from your source to your speakers, it's better (again IMNSHO) use a designed, active (or passive) circuit at line (preamp) level.

I use twisted pairs of 30-ga, enamel-insulated magnet wire for interconnects, BTW.

    :-)

I lived in Meraux,St Bernard Parish. I would drive through the 9th ward to get to work in N.O. Was born and raised in the Gentilly section of Nawlins. We are now living in Brandon,Ms. We may go back someday, but it all depends on whats done to prevent it from happening again. Jazzfest is a lot of fun, been a few times myself. A mix of great music and food you can't go wrong. Thanks for taking time out of your trip to see the sights.

Yea, I wanted to see it. The Fest is my annual trip. I wanted to be able to see the 9th firsthand so that I could come back and express to people how bad it was. I didn't make it to Mid-town this trip. Magazine looked to be at near, normal capacity but the Quarter was sparse. A lot of the smaller businesses were gone. Royale was mostly fine. The outskirts of the Quarter were not. As bad as it looks on t.v. in the Lower 9th, seeing it in person is a whole 'nother thing. Even the trees are dead. I love that city and it pains me to see what happened. All the merchants and muscians stressed the need to let the world know "New Orleans ain't dead." The access to worldclass muscians of all genre's is like no other. They have to get the lower income people and black culture back or it will never be the same city again. Trump has already bought a large property for development, I believe on the water somewhere. If it becomes yuppie town, it will lose its charm.
