Is the sound that much better than what an optical or coaxal output provides. In theory it would seem so, but Ive never seen one in action.

    Depends on the decoder. With a 5.1 decoder you pass 6 analog channels to your pre/pro and your DVD player decodes. With a digital connection your pre/pro decodes. All depends on which has the better decoder built into it. (typically the Pre/pro unless you have an older (or cheaper) unit and a pretty expensive DVD player.
