Used Audio Market - What to pay?

Might be a difficult question, but was curious how others would respond. I've been looking through ads at Audiogon and Ebay and I am curious on what is a fair price to pay for used equipment. Let's say you are looking at a receiver that retails for $1800, fair market might be $1400, used is $1,000. So, if you compared the used price versus retail, that's a pretty good deal (its $800 less or about 44% of retail). But then, who pays retail? So, if $1400 is a fair price for new, that $1,000 price is now only $400 off (about 29%) of buying new. At one time I thought I heard that something used should be closer to 50% of the price when it was new, but that was not really related to electronics. So what is a good ball park number, if there is such a thing?

No such thing as a ballpark figure. Too many variables. Generally, higher demand equals higher price. The best thing to do a is set a budget for what you want and stick to it.HT/2-channel Rig: Sony 50 LCD TV; Toshiba HD-A2 DVD player; Emotiva LMC-1 pre/pro; Rogue Audio M-120 monoblocks (modded); Placette RVC; Emotiva LPA-1 amp; Bada HD-22 tube CDP (modded); VMPS Tower II SE (fronts); DIY Clearwave Dynamic 4CC (center); Wharfedale Opus Tri-Surrounds (rear); and VMPS 215 sub

Lots of people. -
1/3rd of retail is usually a good place to start for non esoteric / non collectable peices 2-15 years old.

I'm with Russ.... in the used market.. you have a lot of wiggle room.... so 1/3 of what it went for new.. is a good price point.PolkFest 2012, who's going>?

I have paid between 25% up to 60%, just depends on the piece. Lots of good deals in the FM and at Rancho de Audio, its being patient that usually causes me the most grief in satisfying the urges.
