How many, here, have ever ran a double Advent system before? Remember how good it sounded?? I did for several years and it friggin rocked.

With all the talk about the Monitor 7A/B/Cs around here lately, I was wondering how a double Monitor 7 system would sound and if anyone, here, has ever tried that out before??

Not only do I remember the double Advents, but I still own four walnut Advents that I bought new in the 70's! I have them boxed up and they need to be refoamed so I haven't listened to them for a while. Double Advents sounded pretty damn good!!!!

Yeah, people will stack anything, seriously.

The Advent Loudspeaker is the ONLY speaker that should be stacked, imo. To finish it out proper, you need a Hafler 500 amp to put the spurs to them, with good ole' 16/2 lamp cord.

That woofer (and alignment) is legendary, the original 'lease breaker'.

    Cheers,

    Stacked Quads?

That would be like stacking a pair of DQ10's.....

I personally did not, I ran mine as singles. But I had a friend who did...and you are right...they DID rock! From time to time I've looked for a nice pair to match with mine and do the double Advent retro rig. It's hard to find a decent pair with the utility cabinets (like I need more speakers anyway  ).

A nice read for anyone interested. From the very first issue of The Absoulte Sound.

did they wire them up parralel? in a series, or just to a quad amplifier?

He had them stacked on their sides, which could not be beneficial for SQ with that particular speaker...the imaging attributes, that make the 7s special, would be lost.

Back in college my roommate and I tried to stack our 2 pairs of Large Advents, but his receiver couldn't hack the impedance drop and kept shutting down. So we ran them in series, but that was suboptimal...

I ran mine in parallel with a variety of amps over the years. When I was looking for some speakers back in the 70's I heard a lot about the Bose 901's, so I went to audition a pair at the now defunct Pacific Stereo in Downey Ca. A sales guy auditioned the 901's for me and I just couldn't believe how underwhelmed I was and I asked the sales guy if there was anything wrong with them and he said no that's how they sound! I told him thanks but I didn't like them and he said I should listen to some Advents they had, so..they had another room with a pair of stacked Advents and I couldn't believe how good they sounded..I bought a pair that day and the following week I bought another pair. For the money you couldn't beat them!

i have never heard of this but am curious as to what amps would handle such low ohms at the time.

Advents were 8 ohms, so running them in parallel made it a 4 ohm load.

Yes, Large Advents were 8 ohms so some amps could handle it, but not all. Small Advents were 4 ohms for some reason...I had a guy come into the audio store I worked at back then, he was looking at a Kenwood 200wpc amp because he "needed more power", said his amp kept shutting down. I asked him what he was running, and he said 4 Small Advents. I was sorry to inform him that the big Kenwood would shut down just as quick as any other amp with a 2-ohm average load like that...would have been nice to sell that amp.

I seem to remember going somewhere and hearing three sets in a large room. It was a wall of sound.

My Harmon Kardon integrated amp drove two sets of smaller Advents with ease, though it could get a little on the warm side if I was really rocking out.

Yeah, an HK was definitely guttier than your average amp...

Fun stuff! Us "senior" Polk folk remember the Advents in the early and mid '70's were the "bomb"! If you had a set of these, you were livin' large. I was in college then and using a "poor boy" system of some Lafayette speakers and amp. I still have the speakers, Criterion VI's. Bought my first Marantz 2230 in 1973. I had it until about 1998. I gave it to a friend who fixed some broken switches and dirty pots. He put it back in service and it is still rockin' today.

Yeah, the last good Advents, imo, were the Maestro and the Legacy. I have a nice set of Maestros, still, but need to get them re-foamed before putting them to use again.

I still run two pair of original Advents, stacked tweeter to tweeter. The Yamaha Cr-2040 driving them in parallel does not even break into a sweat.

Not quite sure what the comment about imaging with Monitor 7Bs on their side means. The 7Bs in the Family room are on their side and have no problems with imaging.

I've run a double large walnut advent system since 1974....still have it powered by a Pioneer 100 watt receiver wired in "p".....no problem with a 4 ohm load. The sound is intoxicating.....nothing beats it to this day.

Welcome to Club Polk. You might have just broken the record for thread resurrection.

I have a lowly pair of Advent 2002, just after the Jensen takeover, and they sound better than they have any right. I picked them up at GW for $8 to try my hand at refoaming. I'd like to hear some real Advents some time.

Heck, even the much-later Jensen-era "Advent" Legacy (II) is a very decent sounding loudspeaker. Actually, I think it might have been better (at least in terms of treble) than the "Original Large Advent" -- which was/is kind of a dark, claustrophobic-sounding loudspeaker, at least to my ears and tastes.

Replacing the original XO capacitors in any of the "Advents" (real or in-name-only) with halfway decent modern ones does help a lot, though.

Currently running Advent/1s on top of NLAs powered by a Crown PS200 with a conservative 170 watts into 4 ohms. Recapped all 4 and the sound is awesome.

To me, the Large Advent had nice clean bass, but I was never a fan of the fried egg tweeter. Too many peaks and valleys.

I heard the Powered Advents when new in an audio store. They were just okay.
