So I was listening to some music last night. Loud but not crazy.
All of a sudden the receiver shut off. Turned it back on again with the volume lower and everything was fine. I felt the receiver and it was really hot.
Anyone ever have this problem? Also on the receiver it said check speaker wire. Any suggestions? I had another receiver say system overloaded but that was only when I hooked it up to Cerwin Vegas.
Any help would be great.
The receiver worked has worked fine all day.

If the receiver said check the wire, most likely the wires are touching each other, creating a short and causing the amp to overload at higher volumes.
Check the wires (both at the back of the receiver and at the speaker) to see if they are touching and adjust accordingly. Also give the wires a complete check for any exposed areas between the receiver and speakersReceiver: harmankardon AVR235

One of the main reasons why I like banana plugs, you don't have to worry about stray wires touching!Marantz AV-7705 PrePro, Classé 5 channel 200wpc Amp, Oppo 103 BluRay, Rotel RCD-1072 CDP, Sony XBR-49X800E TV, Polk S60 Main Speakers, Polk ES30 Center Channel, Polk S15 Surround Speakers SVS SB12-NSD x2

Proper clearance above receiver?

There is really no clearance should I invest in a new stereo cabinet or a fan?Everything I own burned in the fire!!!!!!!!!! -
Frank most likely nailed it...heat. If you can't reconfigure the rack, pick up a cheap "clip-on" fan from Target, or wherever, and use that in the interim to blow/draw air from that area.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

Crack open the owners manual and yopu'll find that the manufacturer has a minimum clearance printed near the front. Typically it's 6-8 inches.
A muffin fan and open doors will help. -
Yeah, Yamahas show "check speaker wire" for thermal shutdowns... usually the problem is heat caused by too much current going through a short in the wires or low impedance speakers but you could trip it by not enough clearance.Gallo Ref 3.1 : Bryston 4b SST : Musical fidelity CD Pre : VPI HW-19
