How many members of this forum has got one of these players? Also what do you think of them? Ive been looking at both, hard to tell the difference in pq. On paper the Blu-ray should have better pq, (1080p) but if you dont have a 1080p tv or projector HD dvd would be a good choice. Is there any news of a combi player in the near future? thanks

I have the Toshiba HD A1. I have not really seen the Blu-Ray in depth but so far the general consensus is that HD DVD is superior but I believe that the Blu-Ray camp is expecting some improvements down the road.

Thanks, these 2 new formats are the dumbest thing the electronic industry had done to us in years. Hard to choose which one will win, I want one of them but I dont want to get screwed again. I had beta & ced !

I have the HD DVD Tosh A1 player as well and the PQ is outstanding. Everything I read on other forums always says the Blu-Ray is sub par or that the transfers arent all that. So far supposedly HD is kicking some serious **** out there. I dont really care about the format war really. My take was I got into the HD format very cheap, excellent pq/sq, and let alone it does some serious upconversion to 1080i via HDMI if you have that. Even connected via component vid, its pq is outstanding however you wont upconvert @ 1080i via component and thats on both players as of right now.

My takes give it a shot if youre arent happy take it back. Simple as that, enjoy.

Blu-Ray movies have an unnatural amount of masquito noise. At my store we have an HD-DVD player running Van Helsing, and a Blu-Ray running House of Flying Daggers (The Fifth Element didn't look any better). Both are hooked up to a Sony 50" SXRD, and both are hooked up via HDMI. I can tell you that the HD-DVD player looks 100 times better.

Now the Samsung player behaves more like a DVD player should, the HD-DVD player can take up to a full minute to load up. I like to use that time to make popcorn or go to the bathroom.

Also with titles like The Lord of the Rings and The Matrix coming this christmas for HD-DVD, and Blu-Ray having the equivilance of Big Mommas House 2. I'll let you be the judge.

Sherardp, what's this about upconversion to 1080i? Dude, I'd rather have 780p than 1080i. Are you sure you meant to say 1080p instead of 1080i?
Don't forget to look at My Home Theater :D

    Receiver - Onkyo TX-SR503
Fronts - Polk Audio Monitor 40

No, 1080i, which is great for us with 1080p sets. If you have 720p set, set it still to 1080i for the best PQ (Toshiba doesn't do good job converting to 720p). 1080i vs. 1080p, no difference there since movies are 24fps and both of these HD formats are 60fps. If the set does correct deinterlacing then the pictures are identical, if not then the difference is very slight according to those who have seen A/B with 1080p and 1080i.

I also have the Toshiba HD-A1. Great unit for both HD-DVD's and DVD (HINT: upconverts through component if there is no macrovision present on the disc)

I broke down a month ago and bought a Toshiba HD-XA1 with the thought of returning it if it didn't wow me. I still have it, and it isn't going back.

It's controls are sort of slow and can be awkward, discs would occasionally skip when it was new (three different discs with no scratches), and movie selection has been somewhat slow in picking up. A couple of work-arounds I found with the player were to never leave a disc in the player when turning it off because boot times are increased. Also, for some reason all the 20 HD-DVD's I've bought have a thin residue on them from the factory that standard DVD's don't have. Once I started wiping the discs off with a soft cloth before playing them, the skipping problem hasn't occurred since.

As far as picture quality goes, either Toshiba player exceeds even a $1500 to $4000 standard definition DVD player's best picture quality by a wide margin. Although improved image sharpness is most noticeable, color quality and vividness is where I'm most pleased with the HD-DVD's.

I didn't even consider a Blu-Ray player because the only manufacturer for the time being, and HD-DVD has better movie selections right now.
