PSW450 setup question

I recently purchased a PSW450. This is more speaker than I need, but I could not pass up the excellent out of box deal I received at Circuit City. My question is about the setup and the best way to route my front speakers through the sub or just use the single monster cable from the receiver to the sub and leave the front speakers connected to the receiver.
I currently have a Sony receiver (D460Z) that supports 5.1 out, Speakers are all Polk: RT600 fronts, 245 center and 25 rears.
I noticed that when I run a DVD, I need to adjust the sub up to actually feel the bass, but when I run receiver, I have to turn it way down because of too much bass. I of course would like to have this leveled out as much as possible.
