it's a monster z2r reference center channel cable. I've noticed this plastic tube in other speaker cable as well, i just don't know if it needs to stay wound up with the rest of the wire?? since the rest of the wire is already wound around it, i guess it should stay that way...

the plastic tube it is wrapped around is likely a dialectric. has to do with helping to eliminate noise interference.

When you are stripping the wire though to make your connections that should be fine to trim out of your way for the short section that you are stripping.

I was curious about the gauge size of their wires, so I contacted Monster service about 4 months ago. In a "between you and me" moment with the gentlemen on the other line, he stated that the wire in question was only 18 gauge. At first, I couldn't believe it as the wire looked to be at least 14 gauge.

IMO the "tube" is a way of inflating the perceived gauge size. Take it out of the equation, and you'll see how few conductors you're actually rolling with. Please also refer to the fact that Monster does not divulge the gauge size of their lower end wire.
I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore
