I have a samsung upconvert dvd player and it only outputs 720 or 1080 through the hdmi.. but when i hook that up the blacks look like a spotted trout, LOL its weird.. componet is fine but only puts out 480p.. now i think the 1080 is P would that make a difference.. not sure what my tv accepts.. so i want a better dvd player but only an upconvert the dvd HD players are to much for the brand and problems.. and im not buying into the hd dvd's yet.. or should i just get a better qaulity player like the denon 2900 or 2910 what ever is the newest and run without the upconvert feature? thanks for any advice.

its nothing im getting now and my budget i will assume will be between 200 - 500 ish..

FWIW, my old toshiba (just gave it to my mother in law) worked via comp. As does my new LG. The rep said it did not but I took a chance brought it home hooked it up via component and there we have it 720 and 1080i. The only time it doesn't work is if the disk is copy protected it won't up convert on component only HDMI. So far only one movie has done that. It apparently works off of Zoran’s Vaddis 8 chipset.

isn't the Oppo supposed to be one of the better players? and $199 is hard to beat if the player is as good as everyone says

That Oppo is still like the second ranked player out there, and does upconversion nicely.

Cliff, you need to check out the Oppo. The DV971H is the highest ranked player in the famous Secrets benchmark tests - http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/cgi-bin/shootout.cgi?function=search&articles=all

FYI though, keep in mind those tests don't really help with subjective things like sound quality or 2 channnel playback.

I personally don't feel the CD playback on this is all that great, nor was that an intention of this product. if you're looking for an all around good player, you may look elsewhere, but if you're looking for the player with the best DVD playback, then I believe this is it.

yes dvd playback only... I may delve into a better player for music later or just use my 3960 tosh from the 2 channel rig for music playback. for now

now will that oppo output HD through the componet? I mean, my tv has hdmi but i dont want the artifacts im getting now.. or maybe i have a bad cable i didn't know about..

I'm not sure about that, I'm using the DVI connection. It ships with a DVI to HDMI cable so you could hook it up to your tv.

Unless your tv is defective, you should be using that HDMI connection if you have it available anyway. It's easier, less clutter, and theoretically provides a better signal (though the last part is subjective) - but it definitely shouldn't be less quality than the component.

I'd say the issue you're experiencing now is either a product of a defective TV, cable, or DVD player, but definitely not an effect of the HDMI protocol itself.

As for the upconversion via component issue, I'd give the folks at Oppo a call and see what they say - you shouldn't have any issue getting them on the phone.

    BTW, the 3803 works great!

may be the dvd player, i think i tried the hdmi cable from the cable box and it was fine.. just didnt see any improvment so i unhooked it. maybe i'll try it again.. on cable till i get a better dvd player, tv only has one hdmi input, but also thinking of getting the sherwood hd600 box for a switcher as the pre doesnt have it..

so does it do that thing you wanted it to? glad it arrived safe.. it literally sat in one spot since new..

I don't know yet, haven't actually had any time to play wiith it, just used it to watch the news as i was unpacking...will play with it some this weekend.

I still never heard back from Denon. I think I'm going to write an official letter of complaint and send it via certified mail.

Unless they have changed the css licensing recently. I would bet, you won't find a legitimate retail DVD player, that upconverts a css copy protected dvd, over component video out, at a resolution greater than 480p (or possibly 540p/576p).

I was able to do a comparison of the Samsung and the Oppo 970. Not close in my oppinion. Purchased the sam for 99.oo plus and insane 90 amount for the hdmi cable. I gave it the full 29 1/2 day run before returning. Worked ok, I could see more of a difference going from 480 to 720 than I did 720 to 1080.

Purchased the oppo because it was more feature rich with sacd player capable (which I havent used yet) for 149 and it include the free hdmi cable.

Much better picture in my opinion, and there is an obvious difference when you choose the 1080i.

What I didnt like about the Sam is that it kept reverting back to the 720 option after I shut the unit. May be a compatible issue with my Hitachi

A Zenith DVB318 will upconvert over component, if it has the old firmware.
