Beastly little DVD/CD Rack from hell.....

Well, technically, I love it........the hell part was making all the shelves. The system is Elfa (from Container Store) where everything is basically hanging from the top mounted bracket. It's totally adjustable and customizable, and able to ultimately support about 400 pounds depending on the length of the top bracket.

I had each shelf cut down and then mounted a back bracket so all the dvd's and cd's wouldn't push back and rub up against the wall. Cutting my own shelves (actually had others cut, and I sanded down and modified) resulted in me saving $225 on shelving. The larger empty shelf is where my laser printer goes.

The downside is that the system cost probably 3x what it would have cost to just go and get another bookshelf, but I like the versitility and it brought the stuff about 3-4" closer to the wall and looks more open than a big bookshelf (or two or three).

I'm not positive of the exact weight number, but they said it was that much for the larger system and the reasoning is that the weight is evenly displaced amongst the various uprights and therefore not as big of a risk as opposed to a singluar shelf with something weighty like a printer on it.....

How many DVDs and CDs is that? It's always hard to get a sense of perspective on that.

I've gotta figure something out for a new rack system myself, but I want to do it right so I don't have to worry about it for awhile.

What makes it hard to answer is that the shelving width can vary from the pre-manufactured to whatever you design. The shelves on the left side are 36" wide and the ones on the right are 18".

If you look at the longest shelf with DVDs on it, I can get 57 DVD's per shelf if I split the partition to where the 36" ends. That times 8 shelves (couldn't get 9 dvd shelves since you'd have to remove one of the cd shelves) would be 456 DVD's.

Just taking the 36" section and utilizing it as I have with 2 shelves of CD's and 7 shelves of DVD's would be capable of holding 160 cd's and 413 DVDs.

I have slightly less than those because of all the other stuff I have (extra cd cases, photos, blank media spindles, etc).....i was primarily looking to give some extra storage room all the way to the wall instead of stopping over the printer....

Anyone could have thrown a bookshelf up there. A little thought and effort made for a much nicer arrangement. Don't see where you store your vinyl though...

The one thing I could have done differently was to mount the top bar lower down which would have put the lowest shelf on the ground (or within 2-3" of it over the baseboard). I didn't want the shelving that low, but still needed some higher space for the larger box sets and things that are on teh second shelf down to the far right. OH, and what I have on the top shelf are the older DVD's that came in those crappy cardboard cases with the flap that comes over the front panel. I hate those sticking up higher and further out than teh normal plastic cases...........lol.

This was very function specific. I wanted something barely deep enough for the DVD's to sit on, and the ability to change the shelves around as needed for future applications. These shelves are 7.25 deep compared to the 8 deep for the Container Store's particle board offerings. The one thing I didn't do was stain/seal the shelves. I didn't have the time, nor the patience for doing that in an apartment, so maybe in the future when I have more interest......

The top bar that runs off the frame to the top left is 80" long, and is offered in shorter lengths, but I figure while apartment dwelling it, I might as well keep the longer bar and cut as needed in the future if I want.

(i know I need to sand/erase the lines......i was extremely eager to get it all put together)......The little wire brackets that they have to attach to your shelf allows you to either point the bracket to the center of the shelf like in pic 1 (giving you about a 3/4" overhang) or angle to the edge to butt it up against another shelf where they share a single shelf bracket like in pic 2. The good thing is that they are easy to adapt with a larger system (just one more uprights, and half the brackets you'd usually need).
