Folks,
Hi to all. Some background first. I am posting after a very long time. In the past 6 months (2 months for family), we moved from GA to VA and we are in the process of settling down. My system is not up as yet, but am working on it. I just received my Monster XPHP 100 feet in-wall cable rolls yesterday, so will be running wires for 7.1 set-up soon. However, in the imterim, I purchased the Sony 60" SXRD XBR model TV (last one that CC had in the Richmond area when I bought it (the 50" is still available and there are a few 60" still available in the Charlottesville area). I also purchased a Samsung DVD-R145 recorder from Crutchfield last week. Am watching how the Blueray vs. HD-DVD battle shapes out, prior to getting into one, though the lower Toshiba HD model is tempting.

This was my first Samsung purchase and I received it in one day from Crutchfield. Have never had any issues with them, but they packed the recorder upside down - not a great deal, but very odd from them. I am not very pleased with the Samsung, and will most likely return. The unit is built very flimsy. There are 25 cent stick-on rubber pads at the bottom instead of proper feet. For a $220 unit, this is tacky. The remote is contructed light and feels cheap. I set it up on Wednesday and connected both HDMI (Monoprice)and component video (also Monoprice) cables to the Sony to check out its operation. The unit is so cheaply built that when installing the hefty Monoprice component cables, the back flexed appreciably. Cannot say too much negative about the performance of the Samsung, but I am not awestruck on the video quality so far. I usually do not return such stuff, but will pack it up and send it to Crutchfield on Monday and will be looking for replacements. Does anyone here use the Samsung, and what has your experience been thus far?
Regards,

PS. I need to update my signature lines. Will add a brand new RTi38 (have had it for over two years) to the main system this time for a 7.1 set-up.

Have not returned the DVD-R145 recorder as yet, but will soon. I wanted to give it another shot. One problem that has surfaced is that it stops a DVD out of the blue. Has done this a few times; has frustrated the kids as well.

I have ordered a Panasonic DVD-S97s player and am waiting for it. It has been around a while and I have read some positive comments on it. Will post an update later.
