Hi all, Long time reader, first time poster. My question is about running an extra amp, what is the significant gain and does it really make a noticeable difference in sound quality? Something I've looking into since I see so many are running extra amps.

    Welcome to the forum.

If you are talking about a seprate amp for your system I would say "YES" it makes a difference.
Normally a seprate amp's output is close to what it advertises while your avr amp may not be reaching its rated output.
Also the amp in the avr is using the same power supply as the electronics use. This can cause power issues that may taint the signal as it travels through the processor. IIRC
A seprate amp also lets you experiment with various components to see what you like best.

If you are talking about using 2 amps to one speaker, you don't gain as much as you think, especially if they are the same model. If they are different models, make sure they have the same gain rating. This provides some benifits due to sonic benifits from each amp (one doing highs better than the other)

Also: to do it properly, you'd need to move the X-over to before the amp and disable the X-over in the speaker. This will actually lower the demands on the amp and give you some benifit.

Nine-tenths of the rights he bellows for are really privileges and he does nothing to deserve them. We not only acquired a vast population of morons, we have inculcated all morons, old or young, with the doctrine that the decent and industrious people of the country are bound to support them for all time.-Menkin
