Good find....?

I was over at a friend's house last night, and he picked up some older audio gear for cheap (free, I think...). He said he's going to get someone to look at it and make sure it works, and would possibly sell it to me for whatever it costs to fix it.

The two pieces that stood out to me were a Mitsubishi preamp/tuner, and an amp. The preamp/tuner is a DA-C20. Here is one for sale on ebay. The electrical cord appears to be cut off at the end on my friend's, so it would need a new plug.

The amp is a DA-A7DC. Here's one of those on ebay. My friend's appear to be in at least as good condition as this one.

So, my question is, if I can get them both for about $60 or so, would it be worth it? Anybody know much about these pieces/have an experience with them?

Thanks!

Certainly for the money you are talking you can't go wrong. I have no experience with Mits audio. Just looking at the pics I get the impression they are probably more show than go. Speaker terminals and power cords are almost always a dead give away. The speaker terms. are about as cheap as you can get as well as the thin power cord. But if they don't have too many repair issues and you can get them on the cheap you can add another experience to your audio library. If nothing else they look pretty cool. :D

How hard would it be to yank out that power cord and install an IEC socket? And change out the terminals? Could be a neat learning experience...

Without looking at it, hard to tell. The power cord changer could get tricky. You will have to cut into the rear of the unit to get an IEC connector into the unit, soldering etc. Terminal replacement wouldn't be hard.

If you're looking for 2 channel application, I would go for a vintage big Pioneer, Marantz, Sansui, etc. These can be found in garage sales or flea markets for cheap. This is just my $0.02.

Good advice, and I appreciate it, schwarcw. The only thing is, I'm not 'looking' for any type of amplification. I just happened to see this stuff in my friend's basement, and it caught my eye. Hmm...I've been wanting to get rid of my PS2...maybe we could work out a trade...

Get it home see what it sounds like and then start thinking about uprgrading it. My personal opinion says it's not the worth the time and effort to upgrade to an IEC in that unit. But if you need the practice by all means use that as the giunnea pig. Anytime you can get gear for next to nothing it's worth it, just don't get your hopes up that it will be any good. No expectations = No disappointments :D

I've done a little bit of googling, but to not much avail. Are there some good sites that discuss replacing stock power cords and speaker terminals?

    Thanks!

    1) get the gear
    2) evaluate the gear
    3) if it's worth it go for the mods

    :)
