I was contemplating buying this disc, just haven't got around to it yet. I'm a huge fan of Steely Dan and Donald Fagan. Plus this disc is available in DVD-A format.

One more thing about this disc, mine came with two one hi def stereo, the other DVD audio and 5.1 sound. I could not get the Multi Channel to play.
Anyone else have this problem?

I find most Steely Dan or Donald Fagen stuff to get better with age or grow on you.

I also find that I get in a specific mood for SD or Fagen, usually to break up a long blues listening period.

Mine also has 2 discs.

1 is a regular redbook CD.

The other has DVD-Audio stereo and 5.1, as well as DD and DTS 5.1.

Do you have a DVD-Audio player connected to your AVR/processor with multi-ch analog cables?

Or, do you need to use the DD/DTS via a digital cable. My DVD player has DVD-Audio, but I don't have the multi-ch analog outs connected. I had to set my DVD player to "play as DVD-Video" to get access to the DD/DTS tracks. This was very frustrating until I figured it out.

I can play the DVD-Audio stereo track just fine (without changing anything in the DVD player settings), since I do have the stereo analog outs connected.

I have the six cables for SACD. I have the Cables for Stereo. I have Optical Cable. I tried every setting and all possibilites to play the multi-channel sound.
The funny thing is, when I loaded the multi channel DVD-Audio Disc, I did get pictures but no sound. I also had this problem with one Elton John DVD-Audio Disc that I bought a few months ago and had to return it. I have many other DVD-Audio Disc that play just fine. Someone told me it could be a encoding problem that might be causing the disc not to play.
The HK was showing 6 channels of sound was available, but nothing to the speakers.

And we wonder why SACD/DVD-A isn't catching on.........too flawed in its execution, and too difficult to setup/troubleshoot.

Dennis, SACD isn't anything like DVD-A. It only requires a SACD capable player for hi-rez playback, no video monitor or that other BS, like two separate discs or one like DualDisc that's too thick too play in a lot of units. All SACD's these days are hybrid and contain a redbook layer that will play in any CD player. Simple really.

I've had dual disc issues Jesse on the SACD track. Not as many as DVD-A though, where I get alot of freezeups and stuff. Neither seem as stable as redbook IMO. I do love some of the resolution that SACD offers.

Hmmmm......I've never had a problem with SACD. What player are you using, perhaps the issue is with it.

I have had zero issues with well over 100 SACD on any of my players. I did have a DVD-Audio disc that would not play one particular track (Fleetwood Mac-Rumours, Oh Daddy) I returned the disc and the next one was just fine.

There is certainly truth in what Dennis is saying for the average joe, especially with multi-track, as the disc's will work with different connections and formats but the high rez tracks only work with the analog outputs. Alot of folks dont even know what Hybrid is, DTS, and so on, they just want to turn the player on and hear multi-channel music.

I prefer SACD over DVD-A, it is just simplier to operate as noted by Jesse. DVD-A operation and set-up I have found to be more complicated and player dependent as to what you need to do to get the disc going to listen to the tunes in the format you want.

I guess my player must be the issue since it only plays every other redbook, SACD, DVD-Audio, and DVD I have. Two DVD-A's I have bought recently have just not played, on those same visits to BB I aquired other SACD's and DVD-A and they play just fine, so I don't think it is a equipment problem.I have a Pioneer universal player and it has never had an issue, just with these two disc. BB made me exchange it for another one that I could not get to play.

I was wanting to know if anyone had the DVD-A copy of the Fagen album and did it play for them. I did manage to replicate the Stereo version before returning it to the store and I know the FBI and the unions are gunning for me so I'll lay low for a while. :eek:

As to be expected with Donald Fagen , excellent recording. One of those CD's to show off your system with. It appears to be standard 16bit recording as I don't see any special markings--goes to show you that we don't need "hi-rez" when music is recorded properly.

Yes, the Redbook is excellent, an outstanding recording, although my sacd quality recordings really shine.
