Someone hold me back...please

I've been trying to land a pair of Magnepan MMGs for about 9 months now; ones with the older crossover, black with oak and a reasonable price. The first pair I called a dealer in TX that had a pair for $350, shipped. I told him to hold them for me for two hours and I would give him my payment info etc when I got home from work (I was busy at work). He said OK. I get home, call him, and no joke, the **** said a guy walked out with them 10 minutes prior, even though he was supposed to hold them for me.

Two months ago I found a pair for $325 + shipping on Audiogon and I contact the seller. He said we have a deal and gives me his payment info. Thirty minutes later he tells me a local guy contacted him and he'd rather sell to him to avoid shipping...GREAT.

Now, check out this ****. I check Audiogon 2-3x a day looking for MMGs and last night I struck GOLD. I was the 2nd person to view the ad and I IMMEDIATELY e-mailed him (took me less than 30 seconds) saying this:

"SOLD! Please provide payment information so we can complete this transaction."

Right after I sent that, only to secure them, I wrote him another e-mail with a little more info as to where I'm located so he can get me a shipping quote, why my first e-mail was so short, and a few other things. After I wrote that e-mail I took a screenshot showing how the listing only had 6 views (check picture) because I knew, deep down inside, this wasn't going to go through.

Well, low and behold almost 24 hours later no e-mail response and guess what, they're PENDING for sale! Yeah! I wrote the seller back explaining how, unless the potential buyer was view #1, that there was no way anyone else put dibs on them. I even e-mailed him the screenshot of the view #6 as proof, and told him to time-check the emails. Well, a few hours later I get this email:

I'm sorry about that, I received at least 30 emails between 2 ad's I posted and probably missed yours. I'll go ask a friend if he is looking to sell his MMG's and will let you know...

Well, needless to say I let all hell break loose and asked him, nicely, to tell the other buyer what happened and to see if he could still honor the speakers to me. We'll see what happens, but in the end, I think I wasn't meant to have MMGs.

Don't bother, the MMG's will just lure you into a larger pair. Go 1.5/1.6 from the start or don't bother...take it from me.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

Doro's right -- you gotta read the signs. MMG's are simply not meant for you, so forget about it. Go directly to 1.6's if you really, really want Maggies.

Anthony, I have something to stick in your bitchy mouth! :D

As far as the MMGs, I just bought a pair that got listed on the A-gon. Check them out:

    http://cls.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cls.pl?spkrplan&1159646586

I was the 6th viewer this time and immediately contacted the seller. The guy is very cool and is selling them because he just acquired a pair of SDAs! I told him about the Polk forum and how he should check it out.

As far as the line arrays, I might actually gut them and throw them out! They are, without the doubt, the best speakers I've ever heard BUT I'm going to be building a new pair of line arrays that will destroy them. Think 10 Dayton RS180 (7") drivers per side, in a dipole config, with 10 Fountek NeoCD 2.0M ribbon tweeters per side.

I can get both at a substantial discount so they're going to run me approxomiately $2250 to build, but will probably be the last speaker I'll ever need (for a year at least, heh!).

As for the MMGs, I'm going to hook them up to my Behringer DCX2496 6-way active crossover and take out all the passive crossover components. I'm going to make them fully active and flank them with a 12" sub in a dipole enclosure on the bottom, and mount the MMGs on top. Basically, they're going to be a totally different speaker than what an MMG sounds like. I'm just using the MMGs for their planar elements and will be doing the active crossover and EQ separately. I'll definately post pictures of these during the build and when they're completed.

    My baby arrays:

    Oh, OK. Sound interesting.

What about just using a 6' ribbon instead of the ten tweeters?

A 6' ribbon would be easier, but is inferior to using a line of ribbon tweeters. The reasons are that a 6ft ribbon (planar) would have a sensitivity of around 88db/1watt, whereas the line of woofers are going to be almost 100db/1w sensitive. The other problem is the high frequency roll-off that large membrane drivers exhibit. Above 13-14khz the sound starts to roll off pretty sharply, around 6db/octave. With ribbons you have great high frequency response, all the way out to 40khz (like anything over 20khz even matters).
