Well not entirely equal... but definitely apples and oranges.
I get different kicks from each one, and depending on my mood, will favor one or the other.

That being said... Alien is in my top five for horror movies. Aliens -- in my top five for action movies.
I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore

Loved them both but Aliens had me MORE enthralled than the original. I loved the gadgets and portrayal of the futuristic "grunt" marines.

Zombie had it pretty much on the button. One is more horror, the other action. Both great.

Can't really comment on this specifically although the Jaws ending was hardcore. However; I will note that I watched Alien vs. Predator a week or so ago in mono t.v. mode. The only movie that was possibly more stupid and worse was the painful, never ending, marathon of ridiculous, Incredible Hulk. On my top five worst ever. Leminy Snickets is right there with it....I would have liked to seen Jim Carey get the boat stake throught the heart...

Alien. While Aliens was good, it could not match the greatness of Alien.
    If...
Ron dislikes a film = go out and buy it.
Ron loves a film = don't even rent.

Alien. 5 feet 10 inches of YOUNG Sigourney Weaver in her skivvies is what I'm all about.

I just thought the Space Jockey was so cool and how the camera back-panned to give it scale. Nothing in Aliens comes close to that.

Damn George! Just what I was thinking!

She was also a very hot "Gate Keeper" in Ghostbusters. Floating around in wind whipped lingerie clinging to her curvaceous figure.

    1. I'd go with Alien. Less action, but scarier.
    2. Glad I'm not the only perv that thought of Ms. Weaver's panty scene.
    3. There was a b/w movie out in the 50's that had basically the same premise
as Alien;ship lands on a foreign planet, takes off with an unknown
hitchhiker, hitchhiker escapes into the duct work, hitchhiker gets blown out
of the spaceship into the vacuum of space. Saw that on "Chiller Theater"
and never forgot it. Except for the name. :(

"AlienS" did have some great lines, though:
"Hey, I don't know if you've been keeping up on current events lately, man,
    but we're in a world of **** !"

I hear you Carl. They had her all slutted up as the Gatekeeper and she looked great. If it was me that she asked "Do you want this body?", she wouldn't have gotten the entire sentence out.

I voted different genera, but Alien is the better of the two. Anyone can throw together the big guns, marines and battles, but the tension building in Alien is second to none.

Plus those size too small underwear don't hurt.
