Denon 2910 vs Denon 1920

Hello Guys:

I have just finished setting up My Home Theater

(Klipsh Quintet speakers, Pansonic 50 inch plasma and the new denon 2807). I have an old Dvd payer but want to take advantage of the HDMI the Denons receiver and the Pani has.

My question is between these 2 dvds that I have been researching, witch is better according to your experience and knoledge?

VS
Denon 1920

I know that they both have HDMI output but the differences are slim (Unless I am not getting the right info) and that price from one to the other almost doubles.

Any advice Guys?

The 2910 is going to be a superior unit. I wish I had time to provide more details, but trust it's a better unit. The question is, is it better enough to justify the price difference - that's subjective.

I've got a 2910 but can't make a comparison for you as I haven't seen the 1920. I can say that the 2910 has a beautiful picture, immediately noticeable from my Panasonic. Rich colors, great contrast, good low light level detail.

I have only seen the performance of the denon 1920 and when you upscale to 1080i the picture is amazing. I have never a Denon 2910 perform.

Has anyone been able to see both, and does price is justified for each unit? Does someone know the differences for these two units?

the 1920 does a pretty good job on upconverting but it's the sound and overall unit performance that makes the 2910 worth it. The 8mb buffer on the 2910 makes for a seemless playback where the 2mb on the 1920 will still pause for layer changes and scratches. The video portion is high quality on both but again, the sound is so much better on the 2910 IMO. I love my 2910 but would like to find a deal on a 3910 eventually.

I know some will flame me for this but for the price youre paying for that 2910/3910 I would upgrade to the Toshiba HD A1. It does a more superior job at the upconversion of SD DVD than both Denon players mentioned and at the same time you can enjoy HD DVD. Just my 2 cents. You can surely take full advantage of owning the player as well since you do have HDMi inputs/outputs. The sound quality is also better than both Denon units. Demo a player set up correctly and you will surely see the Toshibas are better.

Denon is also on the verge of releasing the 2930CI. This looks like a promising replacement for the 2910, so I would either wait for the 2930CI or for deals on the 2910 once the new player is released. I believe Denon has posted info on the 2930 on their website.

Dear god, I don't get what everyone's facination is with the A1. It is not impressive in build quality or sound quality. The picture is pretty good for 1080i but I believe it's all the disk, not the player.

2910... to take a 480i disk and make it better than an A1 with a 1080i disk... priceless.

I know for a fact the A1 is better, its not a fascination Toxis, its reality guy. And I'm not the only one agreeing on the fact. Go over to HTforum and ask for yourself. Until you own one, I guess you'll never know. And the build quality tops that of both Denon PLayers

if that's what it takes to let you sleep at night, more power to you and your facinations.

Now speaking from someone who actually works with the product every day of the week and never sees Denon players returned and has already had 10 A1's returned from defects and because people don't like the quality. Seriously, why buy a first run player that 1. doesn't output 1080p or ever have the capabilities of doing so and 2. can't output a true 7.1 Dolby HD/ DTS HD signal? Way to go man... you bought a player that will be out of date in under 6 months. But again, if you're happy with subpar units, I hope your enjoying it.

I have owned both the 2910 and the A1 and in my opinion the A1 is superior on standard DVDs...now with the 2910 you get SACD and DVD Audio. Is that important to you? If not, and if your plasma is HD capable (I assume it is) I highly recommend the Toshiba HD A1 over the 2910. Not to mention that with the 2910 I had horrible macroblocking on my DLP.

Thank you Wingnut for backing me up on the A1, the A1 does superior upconversion compared to the 2910. Let alone why buy the Denon when you can 1. get into the HD DVD Format for near the same price, 2. take advantage of A1 using HDMI which your plasma does support.

I dont use DVD-A however I have a Sony SA CDp that can handle my CDs, etc. And I could really care less about the A1 outputting a true 7.1 HD Signal, there arent any AVRS that can decode the format yet anyway. So while youre enjoying your SD DVDs on your 2910, I will do the same only on a better player. Do your homework Toxis, most of the early problems with the A1 have been corrected in firmware update 1.4.

As for it being outdated in 6 months, HT is an expensive hobby, so with that said I dont have a problem spending a few clams to stay on top of things. All I'm saying is why would I spend the money on a DVDp that can only play SD DVDs when for the same amount I can get a better quality product for the same amount or less. Its a no-brainer. HD DVD all the way.........If you dont think so go over to Hometheaterforum, and read up and others will concur, and to help you out there are threads where 2910/3910 owners have compared the players to the A1/XA1

It's possible that Toxis just had a better experience with the 2910 vs the Toshiba and has a valid viewpoint...as do we all. There are a ton of variables and subjective opinions. I know many people who have the 2910 and want to marry it but for me, with a DLP...HD A1.

To each their own I guess, I am running a DLP as well. Panny PT60DL54. Its a great screen, Im enjoying both toys, the Xbox 360 looks good on the DLP also.

Ah... there might be the problem. Maybe it looks better on fixed pixel for some strange reason. I wouldn't know, CRT all the way.

Wow this is really a nice discussion. I have my doubts regarding the Toshiba and I am afraid that after six months things can really change specially with all the Blu ray and HD war that we are about to see. I have to agree with Toxis that Denon is a superb brand and that most of their products are flawless in my opinion. The big question here then would probably be: Go with the Denon 1920 (Less money) and when we really have the verdict regarding HD and 1080 p make the upgrade?

The format war will last quite awhile and you will still be waiting in the meantime. Most of the heard of issues with the Toshiba have been fixed with their latest firmware release. My take is this, buy the A1, bring it home and set it up via HDMI. And give it a spin. With most places you have 30 days on the return anyway, and if youre not happy take it back. Simple as that, if its too early for you to get onboard with it fine, but at least you gave it the benefit of the doubt
