no foo foo crap for me either... furthermore, why ruin a good thing with cream and sugar or whatever for that matter! "Black is truly beautiful!:D "
It's all about the bean and I have never been dissapointed with a Millstone Arabica bean! there is no other processed trash that can even begin to compare.

Just don't buy any flavors like tutti-frutti, or hazelnut, or creme de menthe, and you ought to be okay. Just regular Millstone Columbian (heavily-caffeinated) beans for me. If they have see-through bean dispensers at the supermarket, if you can see the oil dripping down the side of the container, it's a good thing.

No doubts on better flavor, haven't tried it myself yet, maybe someday.....I could never wait that long for my first cup of the day.:p
+1 on the BUNN. I would add, that a filtered water pitcher will be your coffeemaker's new best friend. (don't tell anyone, but it makes even Foldger's taste great!)
+1 on the water filter.
As far as the French press method..... I have it down to a routine. I get up take a shower, get out of the shower, grind beans, start tea kettle, shave and by the time I'm done shaving the tea kettle is ready and I pour the water, over the fresh grounds, check club polk while the brew steeps, and 7 minutes later I have a great cup of coffee.

I was thinking the same thing.
I say French press your beans. -
The best coffee maker in the world is a BUNN.
It makes coffee in 2 to 3 minutes and does not BURN the coffee as it passes through the grounds so fast. Used in Resturants throught the world, My last Bunn lasted 10 Years.
Go and Spend 15 dollars for a coffee bean Grinder.
Go and buy Folgers 100 % Colombian COFFEE BEANS.
Folgers ground coffee in a can does not compare to their beans.
$4 for 12 ounces of beans.
Grind a minute before you want to brew a pot.
3 minutes later you have probally the best cup of coffee you have ever tasted,
Sincerely,
Honest John  -

I agree that their product from the can sucks.
Folgers beans are a completey story.
If you haven't tried them with your Grinder, you should. -
This is like a debate over Ic cables..
If ya havent fresh ground folgers beans don't be a coffee snob about it
anyone can pick a high end coffee and say, This is the best the others stink..
I paid 50 bucks for my coffee pot and 120 bucks for the grinder... maybe the folgers is my weak link.. lol
I will however try the millstone, just stop knocking our folgers whole beanMY HT RIG:

Nothing wrong with Folgers whole beans, but also, nothing beats a French press. Drip coffee makers can't even touch it for simplicity and great taste.
I have a Braun coffeemaker when guests are over because it makes more cups, but it is more sensistive to the quality of the beans/roast. The two cup French press, I think it cost $10, will make a good cup of coffee with anything I've thrown at it except pre-ground coffee (that stuff's NASTY!). -
Yeah...coffee snobs. Do you think cowboys on the range in the 1800's put french vanilla in their coffee...huh...doya? Hell no. They bought Folgers classic blend at 7/11 on the trail. That's why I buy it, I'm a cowboy.

Clemmons, have you ever been to the Fresh Market in Winston? I get my beans there sometimes. They usually have a good selection.polkaudio SRS (rdo194 x 8)

You got any idea where that custom home audio place is on Stratford? I hear they have some nice stuff. -

It's across the road from the Fresh Market, going back toward business 40 turn right before the entrance ramp. They are down the hill on the left, audiobliss and I listened to some B&Ws there.polkaudio SRS (rdo194 x 8)

If you think Folgers beans are fresh, you need to get out a little. They're as dry as a bone when you open up the bag. No oil, no taste.
Millstone seems to be the freshest, QUALITY beans that I can find reasonably priced. -

I have toured coffee plants and talked with coffee suppliers and one thing that I remember them talking about was how stale the beans in the plastic displays are.
They are roasted somewhere and shipped to the store, then they sit in the plastic display exposed to the air until purchased.
I buy my beans pre-packed but never remember which ones I liked.
I also know that if I switch my coffee brand every now and then it seems to taste better.
I think people get too "used" to the flavor of their coffee and forget how good a different taste can be.Skynut

Am I the only one that uses an esspresso machine ? No foo foo. No little tiny cup. A 20oz cup, three tablespoons of ultra fine ground. Milk steamed about 60 secs and I'm good. Sometimes put a tablespoon of cocoa in it. Costs about 30 cents to make. My neighbor goes to Starbucks and pays about 4.00 for the same thing. I guess the thought of that makes it taste all the better.Mammoth Ski Patrol4.06.06Fallen But Not Forgotten

Hmm...reading all this good stuff about the french press got me interested. SO my question to the pressing folks: Any style or brand that I should look for? Or are they pretty much all the same?

all this talk about Bunn, please don't tell me you mean the white plastic one they sell in the stores.. I had one and it was no way shape or form commercial style. I ditched it and continued to use my Kitchenaid..
Not saying kitchenaid is the best either, but unless you mean the brown and stainless BUnn commercial machine, fugetaboutit.. in my travels i have had several chances to get a commercial bunn and never thought i needed it that bad, or had the counter space..
everybody has different idea's on what is best or good..MY HT RIG:

Actually for the summer months I rarely drink hot coffee in the morning. I make my own 2 day batch of Iced Mocha.
2- double shots espresso (made fresh in an espresso machine)
12 oz- cold 1% milk
2-3 T hershey syrup.
Shake/mix in atleast a 20 oz container and poor over ice in a pub style glass. Refreshing/extreme coffee taste and that oh so satisfying pick me up. You can adjust the ratio based on how strong you want it to taste. Some omit the hershey syrup, but I like it as it adds deep color and just a hint of sweetness. I've tried other brands of chocolate syrup and hershey has that cocoa flavor that's just right for mixing with coffee. Tastes just like those expensive ones at Starbucks as long as you use real espresso in a real machine. Making Iced coffee with regular brewed coffee is just plain nasty.

P.s. It sounds foo-foo but when it's hot outside it's very refreshing and satisfying. Don't knock it until you try it. It makes great dessert coffee as well after a meal w/guests."Appreciation of audio is a completely subjective human experience. The only ones I've seen are Bodum brand. They even have a new electric one that costs a lot of money. They also come in about 3 or 4 different sizes. Stores like Target, etc. carry their own version (brand) which should do just fine also. Although at Target the Micheal Graves collection is stylish, but very expensive. I've used mine for about 7 years almost daily and have had no issue with it at all (it's a Bodum). I think you can get one for less than $25. Add a robust well built grinder, get some good beans, a tea kettle and your set for one great, rich, full bodied, flavorful cup of coffee.

Polkitup2 wrote:Every cup of coffee I make tastes likes it has been brewed through someones dirty socks. Many days the only reason I don't work from home is so that I can get a decent cup of coffee at the office.
it's usually too much water. if you want to know where the balance starts to tilt towards sock flavour, just make a pot of coffee and let some coffee drip straight into your cup several times during the brew and taste the samples instead of letting them mix with the rest of the pot.
if the first cup through the strainer tastes like socks, then work on different coffees, coffee makers, detergents and how well you rinse. one problem with some plastic coffee makers is that some detergents don't rinse off of them well.
enjoy the ride.

heiney9 wrote:In addition to fresh beans I also use a Bodum French Press Pot. It's a little more work but the coffee is outstanding.
It's a glass carafe with a plunger part. You grind your beans on the course side and pour into the glass carafe. Boil water in a tea kettle until it whistles. Let kettle sit for about 1-2 minutes off the hot burner. Pour water from tea pot in glass carafe over the ground beans. Let stand/steep for 5-7 minutes. Use plunger part which has s fine mesh screen to push the floating grounds to the bottom. Pour in a coffee cup. SO much better than an electric coffee pot cup of coffee, especially if you use good beans to begin with.

I second this. The coffee from these is rich and very flavourfull. The key is to not let it steep too long or some bitter flavours will come out.

Okay, so how many tablespoons of coffee per 5 ounce cup should I be using? I bought some Twin Cities Blend McGarvey coffee and used three tablespoons for a four 5 ounce cup pot and the coffee seemed a bit strong.
