How does this Forum work?

How does this forum work. As a person that uses the New Posts button exclusively, what determines what a new post is and an old one. There have been several occasions in the past that I have asked a question about something, looking for advice and 10 minutes later it is no longer a new post. The same goes for responding to someone elses threads and then it is gone.

Do they just wipe it at certain intervals throughout the day. It should be if a thread isn't responded to within a certain timeframe then it is wiped from being a new post. There are times that I am away for awhile and there will as much as 4 or 5 pages of threads showing up as a "new post".

Just wondering how it works?

It is based on a cookie on your computer. I believe it only shows you post from the latest time you logged in. So the new posts list is unique to every individual.

^^ That's odd. I'm not familiar with VBulletin, but with PHPBB it doesn't work that way - it's the same for all users.

I've often wondered how it works in VB myself. Sometime threads will be there for hours, sometimes they dissapear after only a few minutes.

    Justin??

I believe "new posts" has to do with posts made since the last time you were ACTIVE on the board. Basically clicking or reloading is making you active.

It defintieily has nothing to do with cookies, because when I go from one computer to the next, the "new posts" are valid and have knowledge of my previous visits from other computers.

My preferred method of browsing the boards is
    - log on
    - click "new posts"
    - open each thread that i'm interested in viewing in a new tab
    - click "mark all forums read"
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

As an example just now I returned to the forum and then did my usual new post thing and did not find this thread. However, I had not yet read Bobman's response. I then went into this area and the thread was in bold letters to show me that there is a response that I had not yet read. Clicked in and sure enough.

    Kidding aside........ ;)

I think it has to do with the cookies on your machine. I dont' click on the New Posts button (never have), but when I go into a room, the threads that I've posted in and have repsonses after mine are all indicated with the dark blue box there.

That, and I'm sent an email response telling me that someone's posted to the thread.
