DVD player plays in Black and White

Has anyone here had this problem before? I have ran into this twice now on different DVD players. Last time I returned the player to Costco and got another one but I have now placed the DVD player with a combo VHS/DVD player and now it has happened again. They seem to work fine for awhile and then they only play in black and white. The VHS side of the player still works fine.

I play CD's in the DVD player and I play a limited number of DVD's. The TV is an older (purchased around 1997 or so) Sharp CRT. Is it my TV or something else that is causing this to happen?

How are they connected to your TV? I've seen badly terminated cable / loose connections play only b/w.

The VHS side of the player is connected by RCA cables and the DVD side is connected by a optical cable for audio and a RCA cable for the video. The other day I tried to swap the cables from the VHS side to the DVD side to see if it would correct the problem, but the player still played in black and white.

Tonight, I might try and plug in another TV to see it still plays in black and white. I am just a little dumbfounded why this keeps happenning.

Everytime I saw this problem the person had a video cable hooked into only the green component video jack, and video in on the tv hence no color.

Any reason it works for awhile in color and then only plays in black and white? I had set this up once and it worked fine until recently I tried to play a movie and now I only get black and white.

I will check how I have the cables setup tonight.

sounds like a problem with the component video in/out. Make sure the cables are properly set up from player to tv.

broken pin on an S-video cable will do this, but it sound like you're using composite/ RCA.

Thanks, I will try that next. Somewhere I read if you unplugged the player for 30 minutes or so it would reset itself. I left it unplugged for a day and hooked it back up last night, but still black and white. I will try a different TV tonight.

Well, I learned something today. I never really understood the difference between a component and a composite connection. I had a single composite cable running between the green component on the DVD player and the video jack on the receiver. Once I switched the cable from the green component to the single composite-yellow out, it all worked.

I also learned something about the player, it had two different blocks of outputs and I thought both had to be connected [one for the VHS side and another for the DVD side] which is where I ran into the problem of using the component out plugs. It helped to read the instructions a little more closely. Thanks for your help everyone.
