Anyone know of any 36" (or close) speaker stands that are high mass (or can be shot/sand fileld) that also have wood components? Something like Sanus Natural Foundations but with a very heavy base and/or able to be filled?
I have looked at several manufacturers and have not seen this combo.

Anyone?

Thanks!

That's a really tall stand! What bookshelf are you gonna use?

    Just wondering....

Still on the fence over FXs or 9s. Just not gonna get to mount on the wall. I think that if the FXs are droped down to ear level I am not going to get the benefit of the dbipole/dipole speaker, though I could be wrong. Also, they are not as atractive as the 9s in my wife's eyes.
So, probably going to go with the 9s. I need 36" do get them to be slightly above ear level, and to clear the sides/rear of the couch.

Sherardp, was there a particular stand on those pages that you where suggesting? I can't go with those little spindaly stand you might put a micro satellite on, the 9s weigh 25lbs each (the FXs 50 lbs!!).

    Thanks,

If you're at all handy build a set of these DIY stands only use 6" PVC instead of 4". When they're filled with sand they'll probably reach close to 100 pounds. I built a pair using two 4" PVC columns per stand. They are VERY stable and VERY solid. and they're a great inexpensive route to a pretty nice stand.

To make them even cheaper use MDF instead of hardwood. Lowes or Home Depot can cut the MDF for you if you don't have the right tools.

Skylan Stands I had Noel custom make me a pair of 33in high stands with a top plate that matches the 9s. He can custom make the height to whatever you need, the top plate to whatever you need, and the bottom plate to whatever you need. These are sand fill able high mass with MDF for the top and bottom…pretty much exactly what you are looking for. If you want more mass go for lead shot, or go for a 4 post configuration instead of 2.

Interesting ideas with the DYI and talking to Skylan about custom length.

I finally pulled the trigger today and decided on the 9s. I am used to monopole surround anyway, so I won't know what I am missing in the LXs if anything.

    Thanks for the responses.

In general, I would like to try for a slightly slimmer look than the Sylans, but I will keep those in mind.

While I can be handy, I am not sure I want to be. :) I will probably save that for a last resort.

    Thanks!

If I am mass loading these with sand or shot, which gives the best sound sand or shot, or no difference?

i will probably not fill them more than half way, as I am really using the extra weight to ballast the bottom half so that I can avoid tipping by my kids.

    Gaara,

Thanks for recomending Skylan stands for this use. Noel was great. I just installed my 9s as surrounds on custom 36" 2 post stands with extra large bases and a custom fit top plate. Mass loaded them with layers of sand and shot and all is well. Noel not only worked with me via email, but called me a few times to discuss my exact needs.

I have to say I was most inpressed with Noel and his Skylan stands. Not only did he custom make them to my specs, but he made custon packaging which fully protected the stands, but with no peanuts to spill out everywhere. He included a wrench, a cup for shot/sand filling, and a custom funnel that exactly fits the fill holes for filling with minimum spillage. Directions were straight forward and it took me only 5 minutes to put the pair together. My sons had fun helping me mass load them, and now that my rears are at a proper height it all sounds great. It is hard to beleive that Noel does his custom thing for such a low price. It didn't really cost much more than buying stands would have, and for the money I got a custom fit with great customer service.

    Thanks Noel!

and thanks again to Gaara for recomending this.

    Ruin,

Congrats on your setup. I think you will enjoy the 9's. I think I remember discussing this situation with you in an earlier post.

I have Lsi 9's for mains and Lsi FX's for surrounds on 36" Bello stands. Just wanted to clarify for all who followed this thread, the FX's are 24 lbs each, while the 9's weigh in at 33 lbs each.

My Bello 36", and for that matter, the 24" stands I have in front are rated at 100 lbs per stand. No problem holding either speaker.

    Thanks Hvrnaut,

yes, you did discuss the Bello stands with me. I just decided I wanted a platform that was actually as large as the bottom of my speakers rather than a smaller platform centered on the bottom. Just paranoid with a 4 and 5.5 year old running around. :)

    I would suggest lead.

Thanks for the input. I ended up doing layers of sand and shot. The sand provides better dampening, and the lead adds the extra mass I need.
