It has pretty much always been my habit to remove the dust cover from my TT when spinning records. I suppose I reasoned that since we are dealing with a microphone of sorts sounds would or could reflect off the plastic cover and then be picked up as noise or harmonics and so on. I had no factual basis for this, it was just something I decided, as well as seeing rigs spinning without a cover.
When I picked up the Rega P-25 I continued this habit, even though the manual stated otherwise, Rega recommends using the dust cover while playing a record and even stated the sound would be better, certainly not worse. Of course I disregarded this tid-bit as nonsensical hogwash.
Well, last night for some reason I left the dust cover while using Dire Straits, BIA as the reference material, now I dont know if I am going to say it sounded better, but it did sound different, I was hearing more low midrange, the clarity was greater.
So what do you do? Cover on or off, or depends???

I used to keep the cover down on my Yamaha, mainly to keep dust and cat hair from falling on the record while playing. Now that I have the Oracle, I have been keeping it in the up position, but not "removed." I guess I changed my routine because the Oracle manual advises to keep it in the up position or remove it from the table. I would take it completely off, but I don't have a good place to set it and I don't want it getting scratched up or broken. For rig details, see my profile. Nothing here anymore...

I keep it up or remove it...one less thing to juggle when swapping vinyl.
The sound results will probably vary depending on other factors...TT Stand, cart, etc... If you want to see this issue beat to death, head over to vinyl asylum. -

On. Reduces any tone arm resonance to unnoticable.

Well, I find it interesting that quality manufacture's cant agree, so why should we!!!!! That is part of the fun of this hobby, being able to do your own thing. I have continued to leave the cover down the past few nights figuring I would leave it for a while.
I make my mind up quickly about the sound I hear, its either nice or not to me.
