    Depends: For what?

I have one that I still use occasionally. Minidisc uses a form of lossy compression, similar to mp3, so they wouldn't be a good choice for critical listening. The sound quality is quite good, though, and post-recording editing is easy. I found mine to be useful for recording from radio and I also did quite a bit of recording from vinyl. I should qualify that by saying that it was back in the "old days" when it wasn't quite as easy to record to your PC and burn to CD.

If you're asking about whether or not the hardware is any good: I'd stay away from the low end models and try to purchase one of the better-built units.

It's a dead format. It's a sony proprietary format. Sure, sound quality is OK, and they hold a little bit more than CDs, but honestly.... what's the effing point?
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

Pretty much the only people I know who use MDs these days are bootleggers. They're still tough to beat for that.

Marantz just announced new component combination CD/MD deck to be released next month.

A couple months ago Sony themselves said they were going to discontinue the product line, and then balked for whatever reason. It will die, just like every other one of Sony's ill-fated attempts to create a proprietary format. UMDs anyone?
