Scratchy means dirty, hum ,smoke or nothing means trouble. Sounds like you just need to clean the pots and rca's with Caig's or tuner cleaner.

I'll agree with the above, but here's another possibility that I ran into with an older Pioneer integrated: I can't remember if the Marantz uses a relay that disconnects the speakers for a few seconds after power-up or not (pretty sure it does), but my Pioneer does, and the contacts in that relay were dirty. Apparently one channel was worse than the other, and it produced a scratchy, sort of intermittent kind of sound, ESPECIALLY for a few minutes after the unit was powered up. I removed the relay (soldered in), took it apart, cleaned the contacts, gave them a shot of Pro Gold for good measure, and reinstalled the relay. Since then I haven't had any trouble with it.

P.S. I would recommend against using just any tuner cleaner. Get good stuff, like Caig.

that could be it! i didn't mention that it makes the scratchy noise in any volume position. the controls have always been quiet. can i clean the relay while it's still attched? THANKS!

As far as I know, relays are generally meant to be replaced and not repaired, HOWEVER- Most of them seem to have a plastic cover that's held on by little tabs or ears and can be removed to expose the "guts". That's the way mine was. I had to remove it from the PCB in order to remove the cover. Once it was out I just gave the contacts a shot of Deoxit and a wipe with a lint-free cloth. And like I mentioned, a quick coat of ProGold for good measure.

One of the ways that I discovered the problem was with the relay was to tap on it. I could make the scratchy sound worse or eliminate it entirely depending on where and how I tapped on it.
