SACD vs SACD Hybrid

I recently purchased the oppo970 that supports sacd formats. I decided pick up some sacd music. I was disappointed to find that only one store carries the sacd formats and that is tower records. Decided to check for titles online and was extremely disappointed in the low number of titles available. If you are not a classical or fan of old classical jazz recordings, there really isnt much to choose from.

The Hybrid formats are about 50% cheaper and plays on multiple formats  Would have expected the opposite.

Do SACD Hybrids play in true SACD format?

Yes. There actually aren't many SACD only discs, most are hybrid. Hybrid means that the disc carries a 2 channel redbook layer, a multi-channel SACD layer and most importantly, a SACD 2 channel layer.

As you've discovered, not many stores carry SACD's. The best place to shop for them is online. You can always write (email) the record labels and **** about the lack of rock & roll/blues music available on SACD, I do.

Thanks for the link to SA-CD.net! Nice setup there.

I also use http://www.acousticsounds.com for SACD, XRCD and they have a large selection of vinyl there also.

I'd also recommend scanning through ebay for SACDs. Many titles are released outside of the US and you can only pick those up from foreign resellers....for example, the hybrid SACDs of The Police and Peter Gabriel. I don't think these are available from US e-tailers.

Does anyone know if this player down-converts the DSD to PCM before output? I know sub-$400 players use to do that but couldn't find any info on the oppo.

The Oppo will for sure down-convert from DSD to PCM is the HDMI digital output is used (this is the first player to output DSD digitally via HDMI). However, I am not sure whether the Oppo will do a similar down-conversion if its analog outputs are used.

I think most budget universal players will down-convert if bass management is used. The are some, such as the older Pioneers, Samsung, Toshiba and Sony, that will stay DSD until the analog outputs.

    Jabrax,

Some SACD rock discs I enjoy

All of the Elton John--His early works are on SACD.
    Abraxas--Santana
    Alive in Seattle--Heart
    In the Flesh--Roger Waters
    DSOTM--Pink Floyd
    AeroSmith--Greatest Hits
    Blood Sweat and Tears
    Cant Stand the Weather--Stevie Ray

Thats a few to try, although, as you can see Older Bands, but then I am old guy. I would recommend some of the Classical and Jazz titles, even if its not your primary gender of music.

Hybrids USED to cost more. The difference is that Hybrids end up selling better...
