Hi to all, I am new to this forum so here goes; I do belong to another forum called AV Forums as well.

Anyway, I have been told by many people and some agree and disagree.

Should I leave my Denon 3805 AMP on all the time plus my Arcam CD 93T cd player? Both manufactures say leave them both on as most electronics like to be kept at a constant temperature as they work better and should sound better when warmed up and even last longer or at least help prolong the life of the equipment that way .

I used to just switch on both units and leave them to warm up for a few hours before use , but I was also told that is not always the best solution as for the amp it will keep surging the relays all the time when you switch the unit on and off all the time .

So for the past 6 months or so I have left both AMP and CD player on all the time apart from a very bad thunderstorm which does hardly occur here were I live so most of the time it is safe. I have also 2x belking isolators plugged in as well to protect the equipment to.

Any ideas to what you all do with your equipment out there???

I do have enough room for air to circulate around so that should not be too much of a problem leaving them both on.

I personally wouldn't leave the 3805 on. I've had the 3803 for several years now, first used as an AVR and then as a pre/pro. I turn in on/off up to 3 times a day as needed and it still works like new. If the 3805 is anything like the 3803, it gets quite warm even when idling and I don't like to leave it cooking like that overnight. Anyway, your Denon goes into "standby," not fully off, right? As for the cd player, if it generates little heat I would consider it less of a problem to leave it on for long periods.

The only thing I leave on is my DAC for 2 reasons; 1. It doesn't have a power switch; 2. It's meant to be left on.

If you are a frequent user it makes sense to leave it powered on, but if you are an occasional listener power down. Me personally, I leave my system on all weekend when I'm going to be home beacuse I listen alot. During the week it's powered off.

As far as wear and tear, I doubt it makes a difference if you leave it on all the time or turn it off and on when in use. If a high quality component can't be left on to idle with out detrimental effects over time then one should look at getting a different component.

As a point of reference I have a Nakamichi receiver for my office rig and it gets very hot just idling, the bias current is very high at idle by design. The unit is 20 years old this month and I've never had an issue with it when left on for long periods of time. Sometimes in the summer months w/o the air on the top gets almost too hot to touch. 20 Years of this and it's still functioning fine. Get my point :)

Your Denon receiver goes into standby mode when you turn it off so you don't have to worry about it, Turn it off.

The cd player I would turn off as well. The only thing I leave on full time are my amplifiers.

If you live in Florida turn it off when not in use, the power surges and dropouts during all the weather cause a lot of stress on components even with surge protection.

i've just gotten into a habit of turning everything off when not in use. i have never had any piece of gear fail because of it.

although it may not use much power.. it's still burning some power when you aren't using it.. and i like to conserve whenever i can. it's just me. call me foolish. You wouldn't leave your car running till the next time you needed to use it right? ;)

I power down my equipment. The receiver goes into standby. The amp and the CDP's power down. I don't like to leave equipment running.

Hi Their, Many thanks for your reply. I was one that liked to turn everything off all the time and just switch it back on when needed before I was told by Denon and Arcam and some friends told me just leave them on as long as there is enough air to get around the equipment.
I was also told that when left to idle these amps use very little current.

Arcam when I rang them up states that they indorse leaving all there equipment on all the time and they like to be kept warm.

I use to have a Denon 3803 before I upgraded to the new 3805 and they both seem to heat up the same feels just very warm and that's it to the touch.

I do use the amp everyday for use for my TV and then several hours of playing music some nights.

If I put the 3805 onto stand by it then goes from a green light when on to standby red and you recon that is the best way by your advice or your experience.

I felt that the amp sounded much better when left on all the time just like my Arcam CD 93T cd player, only on the cd player I can not turn of the display when it is idle mode but that has not bothered me at all .What have you done in the past with your equipment how long do you leave your amp to warm up when you use your equipment each time.:)

    Best

Ok Folks, I am trying some of your suggestions, I have switched of my Denon 3805 from fully on green light to the standby mode red light for the first time in months I think. See how that goes, secondly my Arcam CD93T cd player I will leave on as it does not seem to give as much heat off as my AMP does. Just Luke warm to the touch so I think that should be ok just left on all time. Shame I can't switch of the display when just idling the only time I can switch of the display is when I am playing a cd.

    I will be in touch.
