Not boarding a connecting flight???

I want to fly to Atlanta to go home for a week. Right now, it costs $500 to fly to ATL. However, if I want to fly to Birmingham, AL, it only costs $320, but I have to fly to Atlanta to get to Birmingham.

So...what if I didn't get on my second flight? Is the USSS or FBI gonna hunt me down?

    Hey Wes,

No problem getting there, but they will probably cancel you return flight. They typically won't let you board at the connecting city, either.

    That makes sense.

I figured I would have to drive to B'ham for the return flight. Thanks, Courtney.

Is there an effective way to fight them if they did cancel the return flight? Or is that now 9/11 SOP?

If you do not board a segment of your flight, they will cancel all your remaining flights. Lots of reasons for this, some relating to security, some relating to load planning.

Well, if they want to plan their load better then it sure seems like a high-volume airport like Hartsfield would be cheaper to fly to than Birmingham.

I just hate getting my **** raped.

Typically, by the time you de-plane,get your baggage, etc, you could have driven to Birmingham @ peak times anyway(Hartsfield can get crazy)

Oh I know, but I'd be arriving well after 10PM and Hartsfield can start to get slow at those hours and later.

another thing to consider, which i'm sure you have, is are you only going to take with you a carry on? or will there be cargo bay suitcases? if so, i don't think you'd be able to snatch it before they get it loaded on the connecting flight.

It's got nothing to do with security or post 9/11 environment. It's got to do with price fixing. All airlines match prices for like destinations. So if you've got Southwest competing with AA for the same destination, you get cheap prices on both airlines. If you don't, you get slammed on the higer price. I fly out of DFW airport. A direct flight to Las Vegas is always more expensive than a flight to Las Vegas originating in Austin, connecting in DFW, and continuing on to Las Vegas. The only reason is due to Southwest offering service out of Austin to Las Vegas.

It's like flying to DC. Any DC airport is twice the price of flying to Baltimore.

Birmingham is cheaper because Southwest flies there. They are trying to compete with the Southwest fare. If you get off in Atlanta, the remainder of your ticket will be cancelled.

Some flights are the opposite- depends on where you're flying. I'm 15 minutes from BWI but I'm giving in- laws rides to National a couple times a year because they found cheaper flights. Pain in the ****...

crap thank god you guys don't live in Canada where it's cheaper for us to fly to Europe than it is from one end of the country to the other.. Heck my flight from Ottawa to Costa Rica was cheaper than flying from Ottawa to Vancouver.
