Some records to look for

Hello,
For those listeners who like to find vinyl treasures in yard sales, flea markets and Goodwill Stores here's some recommendations that are part of the Reader's Digest record sets that can sound excellent. These were actually made by the RCA company for Reader's Digest, so you can hear some incredible sounds. Don't let the hokey titles fool you, this can be quite a find. Look for:
"Beethoven: The Nine Symphonies", Leibowitz
"Festival of Light classical Music"
"Most Unforgettable Music": (very hard to find)
"Scheherazade (Rhapsodic Mood Music)"
"Rachmaninov: The Romantic Rachmaninov" with Horenstein/Wild
These are all elaborate boxed sets, with special packaging and descriptive booklets. All done to create something subscribers would want to collect. But, what I find is that people often thought they would become interested in classical music (or hope someone else would get the bug) so they started a subscription and then ended up not listening to them. So, they can often be found in excellent condition, audiophile quality records at flea market prices.
Enjoy, Ken

Yup! I've found a number of boxed set from Reader's Digest in NM or new condition for $2.00 a box set. I bought four of them recently at a garage sale. "Sentimental Music" and assorted jazz collections. Including music from Charlie Parker, Miles Davis and many others. A STEAL!!!!!:DCarl -
I tend to agree with you. Often the boxed sets contain fantastic recordings and most are in mint condition. It is a good way to obtain a library of period music that contains most popular songs of each decade.>

Thanks Starchaser! I like the garage sales. I have found my best buys there. I haven't much luck in thrift stores.Carl

I found Beethoven "The Nine Symphonies" (7 album boxed set) a month or two ago at the thrift store for $8 and knew I couldn't pass it up. I would call the condition as close to like new as possible. Thanks for confirming what I thought was a good deal.

Hello,
Good, I'm glad the Reader's Digest records are showing up. They deserve to be listened to and appreciated. Here's some more that might not be the sonic wonders of the first list, but still should be looked for:
"Eric Robinson's World of Music"
"Music of the World's Greatest Composers"
"Treasury of Great Music" this includes the Reiner Brahms Symphony 4
"Handel: Messiah"
Good hunting, Ken! -
Ken, Funny you should mention this...
I picked up a lot of about 150 albums for free a few months back from someone that was doing some spring cleaning and just wanted to get rid of them.
In the collection were about 6 or more of those Readers Digest collections including, "Elvis, His Greatest Hits", "The Swing Years", "Music of the Worlds Greatest Composers", "Quiet Music for Quiet Listening", "Background Moods", "Organ Memories", and maybe a couple others.
So far, I've only listened to the Elvis, the Composers, and the Swing Years, but I must say, so far, I'm impressed. Very good recordings. For rig details, see my profile. Nothing here anymore...
