First, the good:
1. Super customer service.
2. The DACs are not as good as in my CA 640C CDP nor my NAD T773, but OK. Sounds spectacular playing HDCD through analog with the player's video electronics turned off, much better than playing the same CD on the CA or NAD, which don't have HDCD capability.
3. High resolution formats, SACD and DVD-A, sound OK (for $150, what do you want?).

The bad:
1. Does not seem to like my monitor (cheapo 52" RCA HDTV rear projection monitor). Even after hours of trying to bring the Oppo 970 up to snuff, the picture quality is better using my $45 DIVO.
2. Can't think of anything else, but I was expecting better re picture quality.

interesting, I assumed you have only component to hook it up to?
I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie.

The OPPO's superb picture quality is thru it's DVI connection. Using componet hookup wiil not give you the picture quality it is capable of. If you don't have a DVI hookup you pretty much have reached a dead end.

Tried both component and DVI/HDMI. You are correct, the best picture, by far, was through DVI/HDMI, but still not good.

Goofy too is that the best picture is through 480i, not 480p nor 1080i. Through DVI, native resolutions for the monitor are 480p and 1080i.

OPPO Customer Service has no ideas, except further calibration. After spending a Saturday on it, I give up.
